National Safety Month 2017: Keep Each Other Safe!

Each June, the National Safety Council — and thousands of other organizations across the country, including Seton — works to raise awareness about safety by putting on National Safety Month. The goal of the annual campaign is to increase safety at work, on roads and in homes. This year, the theme for the month of June is to “Keep Each Other Safe.”

In fact, each week of June will be dedicated to highlighting a different safety topic:

  • Week 1: Stand Up to Falls
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), slips, trips and falls account for the largest number of accidents in general industry. They’re responsible for roughly 15 percent of accidental deaths, and are second only to motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of worker fatalities. In the construction industry, however, falls are the leading cause of death, accounting for nearly 39 percent of deaths in the construction industry alone, according to the most recent OSHA statistics. In order to “Stand Up to Falls,” you should start by arming your workers with the right equipment. If your employees work from heights on a regular basis, be sure you equip them with proper fall protection equipment. In the same vein, if there are certain areas around your facilities that are prone to spills and other messes, make sure you have the correct signage and spill kits to encourage individuals to be careful.
  • Week 2: Recharge to Be In Charge (Focusing on Fatigue)
Your employees are not going to be productive if they aren’t well rested. Take it upon yourself to remind your workers to get adequate sleep every night after work. If you want to help your employees work more extra comfortably, consider providing them with anti-fatigue mats, too! Anti-fatigue mats are perfect for any area you’d normally use matting. From wet indoor kitchens to outdoor garages and dry offices and facilities in between, there are mats to fit virtually every work environment.
  • Week 3: Prepare for Active Shooters
Hopefully, a day will never pass in which you’ll have to put your preparation into practice, but it’s important for you and your co-workers to be prepared for active shooters on your workplace property. Train your workers on the best ways to hide from a shooter, flee a shooting rampage and prepare for other unforeseen — and unpredictable — events.
  • Week 4: Don’t Just Sit There (Focusing on Ergonomics)
Work-related musculo-skeletal disorders are responsible for nearly 33 percent of worker injury and illness cases, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Lifting heavy items, pulling and pushing heavy loads and repetitive motions can cause sprains, pinched nerves, slipped discs and even tendinitis, in extreme circumstances. Workplace ergonomics products — such as back supports, knee pads, wrist wraps and elbow braces — can go a long way to help your workers avoid these types of injuries.
