FIVE STAR Concert Band Titles from Hal Leonard

recommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

Ebullient Energy by Michael Oare, Grade 2
Commemorating fifty years that the Bay Youth Orchestras of Norfolk, Virginia have served young musicians in the area, “Ebullient Energy” masterfully portrays a feeling of enthusiasm and joyous excitement. Written completely in one tempo and featuring tuneful melodies, fresh harmonies and careful pacing, this work will provide a rewarding experience for all!

Selections from Encanto arr. Paul Murtha, Grade 3
From Disney’s blockbuster animated feature, here is a terrific medley for the concert stage featuring plenty of Latin excitement. Titles include: “The Family Madrigal,” “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “Dos Oruguitas,” “Surface Pressure,” and “Waiting on a Miracle.”

Juba Dance (from Symphony #1) by Florence Price/arr. Jay Bocook, Grade 4
Florence Price (1887-1953) is noted as the first African-American female composer of symphonic works, and is only in recent years beginning to receive the recognition so richly deserved. Her Symphony No. 1 was completed in 1932 and first performed in 1933 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Here is a sparkling transcription for Band of the third movement (“Juba Dance”).

Vallum Hadriani by Jay Bocook, Grade 3
In ancient times, Hadrian’s Wall was a Roman fortification running for 73 miles in northern England and marking the boundary between Roman Britannia and Caledonia to the north. Jay’s inventive work for band features a Roman flavor along with unique textures and effects, including a dramatic sword fight. Distinctive and exciting!
