DANCE with Your Orchestra

recommended by Megan W., Orchestra Specialist

Air for Buenos Aires by Chris Thomas, Grade 3
Feature a guitar soloist or any member of the Orchestra (or even a combination of players!). Inspired by the Tango-influenced music of Astor Piazzola, this work paints a portrait of a sleepy, late night in Brazil as a lone tango dancer walks the streets. Every member of the orchestra has the solo printed on the back of their section part, giving directors incredible flexibility with choosing a soloist or combination of soloists. A powerful and beautiful work.

A Dua Lipa Duo arr. Michael Story, Grade 2.5
“A Dua Lipa Duo,” arranged by Michael Story, combines two of the award-winning singer-songwriter’s biggest hits. Clear bowings and fingerings will help your students get in the groove. The arrangement is completely playable by strings alone, but there are optional parts provided for piano, drumset, and accessory percussion.

The Dancing Master by John Playford/arr. Andrew H. Dabczynski, Grade 2
English country dancing has been popular for over 300 years, and “The Dancing Master” features two delightful folk tunes in that timeless style arranged by Andrew H. Dabczynski. The first lively tune, “Jamaica,” has been used in the theme to the British TV comedy, “Upstart Crow,” and the second, “The Goddesses,” offers a charming contrast. Attributed to John Playford, these melodies fall under the fingers of beginning string students with interesting, rhythmic parts for all players. An optional hand-drum part adds to the upbeat 17th century dance atmosphere.

Time to Tango by Erica Donahoe, Grade 3
The tango is a partner dance that originated along the Rio de la Plata in the 1880s. This creative and engaging original work provides all the flair and rhythmic syncopations that make the traditional dance so appealing. Optional maracas, bongo, and guiro parts add the perfect spice.
