Asteroids by Michael Story, Grade 1
There are almost one million asteroids in our solar system, with the main asteroid belt lying in orbit around the sun between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids can range in size from less than 33 feet to around 580 miles in diameter. Based on notable asteroids and the mythological figures they were named for, Michael Story’s “Asteroids” is a mini suite that contains three contrasting pieces: Pallas, Ceres, and Vesta.

Cook Strait Crossing by Laura Estes, Grade 1
Based on a true story from New Zealand, composer Laura Estres presents an ideal piece for historical lesson plans, as well as for contest and festival performance. Students will learn from – and love – “Cook Strait Crossing.”

Deimos (Bringer of Terror) by Timothy Loest, Grade 0.5
Many know “Mars, the Bringer of War.” Now meet his diabolical son Deimos, the Bringer of Terror. Fashioned in the style of Holst, this work uses driving rhythms, dark harmonies, and an asymmetrical form to personify Deimos, the Greek mythological god of terror and the namesake of Mars’ second moon. Enjoy this first offering from Loest’s suite “The Moons.”

Distant Journeys by Chris M. Bernotas, Grade 1
A strong sense of rhythm, dramatic melodic lines, and tension and release characterize the sound and feel of “Distant Journeys.” The rhythmic nature of this piece gives the sense of traveling and adventure.

Monsters, Unite! by Kelly Dugger, Grade 1
“Monsters, Unite!” by Kelly Dugger is a fun beginning Band piece that is sure to be a hit, not only at Halloween time but all year round. Monsters all around the world are waking up to a calling to unite. Some are big, hairy creatures, and others are delicate and fairy-like. They walk and fly long distances to find each other. In the end, they all come together, marching as one. Just when you think they’ve marched off into the distance, they come together to surprise the audience. Unique percussion effects – timpani glissando and theremin (or flexatone) – add to the spooky sound. A tuba solo at the end is followed by a surprising scream that will leave the performers and the audience giggling!

A Scottish Festival by Brian Balmages, Grade 1
This spirited work depicts a parade in Scotland from a spectator’s viewpoint. Based on the popular folk song “Aiken Drum,” the piece layers various elements to create the iconic sound of Scottish pipes and drums. Original music intertwines with Celtic sounds as the parade reaches its peak with a full battery of percussion contributing to the joyous atmosphere.

Wings to the Mind by Brian Balmages, Grade 0.5
This fanfare-style work celebrates the famous quote by Plato in which he states “Music…gives wings to the mind and flight to the imagination…” Despite using only six notes and basic rhythms, the work sounds shockingly mature and powerful. A strong, celebratory work for your youngest musicians!

A Woodland Celebration by Robert Sheldon, Grade 1
Perfect for opening or closing a concert for first-year band students, “A Woodland Celebration” by Robert Sheldon lends a light rhythmic style to a tuneful melody. As soon as young students can play a concert B-flat scale and learn the note concert A-flat, this piece is easily playable. Second clarinet does not go over the break, and second trumpet and horn have limited ranges as well.
