April 1-7 Marks the 19th Annual Global Asbestos Awareness Week — Here’s What to Know

Tags:

Every year, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) dedicates the first full week of April to Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW). Simmons Hanly Conroy will join the efforts April 1-7 and invites everyone to join us in the fight to ban asbestos.

For nearly two decades, ADAO has dedicated itself to generating much-needed awareness of the dangers of asbestos, preventing exposure to the carcinogen and leading the campaign to ban all use and imports of asbestos in the United States.

Asbestos was used heavily in a wide range of industries because of the mineral’s unique temperature resistance, durability, and affordability. However, people began developing mesothelioma and other diseases after asbestos exposure as early as the 1930s.

Despite the undisputed scientific evidence about the dangers of asbestos, manufacturers of asbestos-based products continued to hide the dangers of their products and put millions of lives at risk of developing life-threatening diseases.

After her husband was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2003, ADAO Co-Founder and President Linda Reinstein has led the organization in its fight to ban asbestos and protect many more families from the pain of asbestos-related diseases. You can join the efforts during this year’s GAAW.

Join the Fight for a Full Asbestos Ban

Contrary to popular belief, asbestos is still not completely banned in many countries, including the United States. In the U.S. alone, 40,000 innocent people die from asbestos-related diseases every year.

Some progress is being made thanks to nearly two decades of dedication from the ADAO and other advocates. In March 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed a ban on chrysotile asbestos, citing its harmful effects. However, the proposal still faces lobbying from industries that could lose out on profits while knowingly endangering American lives.

To help kick off the 19th annual GAAW and educate the public on the dangers of asbestos, Congress has reintroduced the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act (ARBAN).

This bill, if passed, would ban all uses and importation of asbestos, no matter the type.

“It is unacceptable that the United States continues to allow the importation, manufacture, and distribution of asbestos — a known carcinogen that has killed too many people in our country. Workers, families and communities must be protected against this deadly substance.”
– Oregon Representative Suzanne Bonamici

Every voice lifted during this Global Asbestos Awareness Week is critical in making a positive difference. Learn how you can show your support.

Show Your Support During Global Asbestos Awareness Week

Join the global push for asbestos awareness and advocacy this year by supporting GAAW and its important initiatives.

This year, GAAW will focus on the following goals:

  • Ban the mining, manufacture and use of asbestos around the world
  • Increase compliance and enforcement of existing asbestos laws and regulations
  • Prevent asbestos exposure
  • Strengthen international partnerships to protect public health

While asbestos-exposure prevention is crucial in the United States, the importance of involving the entire global community in the movement to ban the deadly carcinogen cannot be underestimated.

Asbestos remains legal for use and importation in more than 70% of the world, including the United States. As long as there remains demand for asbestos, the needless illnesses and deaths it causes will not end.

Some ways you can help the efforts during GAAW include:

  • Educate friends and family about the dangers of asbestos, where it can be found, and how to avoid exposure
  • Follow organizations like the ADAO on social media and interact with or share their posts
  • Listen to stories and offer emotional support to those living with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases
  • Sharing your own stories about how asbestos has impacted you and your family
  • Write letters to your Members of Congress and local legislators urging them to support a full asbestos ban by passing the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act (ARBAN)

No matter how you choose to get involved, share your thoughts, stories, and photos throughout the week using the #2023GAAW tag.
