Medicine Cupboard Essentials

If, like many parents, your Medicine cabinet consists of a few half-empty bottles of cough mixture and some out-of-date medicines, now might be the time for an update. Here is a list of a few basics that we should all have, just in case.

It’s worth noting that bathrooms are not the ideal place to store medicine, because of the variations in temperature and damp environment. A high shelf in your bedroom or kitchen might be better. You should check products are still within their use-by date every few months.

Thermometer: An absolute essential. The digital ear ones are handy, although the refills for the ear piece can be expensive. The latest type of infrared thermometers simply require you to point the laser at your child’s head and press a button – no contact needed.

Paracetemol: Used to Relieve Mild to moderate pain and to bring down a temperature. There are loads of brands available, available in liquid or suppository form, including Calpol, Paralink and Paralief. The suppositories are very fast-acting, so great for bringing down a high temperature quickly. Dosages vary, so always read the label.

Ibuprofen: This is also a painkiller used to relieve mild to moderate pain, inflammation and fever. Like paracetemol, strengths and dosages vary, so always check the label. Available as a liquid or suppository.

Karvol: These are capsules filled with a strong-smelling liquid. Break one onto a muslin cloth in your child’s room to help clear a blocked nose.

Saline drops: These are great for relieving blocked noses, which can prevent little ones sleeping well.

Gel bandages for burns: These are sterile bandages soaked in a cooling gel, which help to soothe burns quickly.

Antiseptic wipes and cream: Apply the cream to cuts, grazes or minor burns after cleaning with wipes to help prevent infection.

Plasters, gauze bandages and tape: For covering cuts and larger wounds.

Head lice comb and treatment: Sooner or later, one of your children is likely catch head lice, and when they do, you’ll want to treat it as quickly as you can. A variety of treatments are available at the chemist.

Handy tools: Keep a tweezers, scissors and a measuring spoon in your Medicine Cabinet, so you’ll be able to find one when you need it.
