Raksha Bandhan being celebrated across the country today

New Delhi: Rakshabandhan, the festival of brothers and sisters is being celebrated across the country today. It is observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shraavana.

On this day, sisters tie colorful rakhi, a form of woven bracelet, around the wrist of their brothers as a form of bond and pray for their long life.

Raksha BandhanIn return, brothers pledge to protect and support them and present them a gift. The ritual is also found between priests and patrons, and sometimes by individuals with the wish for long life and protection. The day is marked by family gatherings and celebrating the festival by preparing traditional food and sweets.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu have greeted the people on the eve of Rakshabandhan. The President has extended his warm greetings and good wishes to all fellow citizens in India and abroad.

Raksha BandhanHe said Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of the unique relationship between brothers and sisters. May the spirit of this festival strengthen fraternal feelings and inspire us to live in a society defined by universal respect for the security and dignity of women, especially of girl children.

In a message, the Vice President said that Rakshabandhan is celebrated all over the country reaffirming the strong bond of love and affection between brothers and sisters. The festival also upholds the high place traditionally accorded to women in our society.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also greeted people on the occasion. He said in a tweet that greetings to all countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
