Theater to prevent heart disease
“One of the messages that has more impact on parents is that their Children tell them ‘ do not smoke, dad ‘”, says Almudena Castro, president of the Vascular Risk and Cardiac Rehabilitation section of the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC) and director of the Mimocardio project , an initiative promoted by the SEC and the Spanish Heart Foundation to improve the quality of life of the coronary patient. The power of children over the habits of the elderly is one of the benefits of Mimokids , a program within Mimocardio to raise awareness among children and adults about the importance of leading a healthy life when it comes to preventing vascular diseases.
“Fortunately, children do not have acquired vascular disease. Pathologies such as heart attack, angina pectoris , heart failure or arrhythmias appear in adulthood, when the risk factors accumulate , “says Castro. “That is why it is important to educate them from childhood, when they are more receptive, to inculcate habits such as exercising, following a correct diet and avoiding tobacco, ” adds the specialist.
That is the goal of Mimokids, a play aimed at elementary school children with a star message: changing to a healthy life is worth it . Thus, the purpose of Mimokids is twofold: on the one hand, children are educated about the need to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle and, on the other hand, the message is transferred to the whole family to achieve a positive effect on the elderly, which are the population at risk. “Primary school children are at an ideal age for the creation of habits; In addition, it is indirectly achieved to educate parents who, while the child is rehearsing, are hearing messages such as ‘I am an artery that obstructs me because I eat cholesterol ‘ “, illustrates Castro.
And the fact is that risk factors play an important role in Mimokids. As the project manager highlights, these are the main ones in order of importance:
- Have hypercholesterolemia .
- Being diabetic .
- Lead a sendentary life.
- Suffering stress
” It is very difficult for a heart patient to have a single risk factor , there is usually an overlap between them, everything adds up,” Castro emphasizes. With Mimokids, the SEC intends to go beyond prevention from the hospital and get its message to penetrate homes and schools.
According to the person in charge, the initiative has been received by schools in Galicia, Madrid, Andalusia, Extremadura, the Basque Country, Catalonia and other autonomous communities that will represent the work throughout the course, adapted to their own educational project. “Some schools will represent it in English, within its cultural week, etcetera,” exemplifies Castro. The centers assigned to Mimokids, in addition to representing the piece, will record it to send it to the SEC and thus opt for a prize: an automatic defibrillatorfor school and a cardiopulmonary resuscitation course .
