Almost half of Indian children eat breakfast alone

Almost half of Spanish children eat breakfast alone

Forty percent of Spanish Children do not eat breakfast regularly in the company of relatives, and eight percent of children over six do not eat this meal on a daily basis , according to the Study on breakfast habits in childhood , which has presented in Madrid the Spanish Foundation of Dieticians Nutritionists (FEDN), the Spanish Society of Social Pediatrics (SEPS) and the Tulipán company.

“There is a need for certain changes in the way we eat. Eating habits when we eat alone are not adequate ; many studies indicate that it is important to do it in company “, affirms Giuseppe Russolillo, of the FEDN.

Jesús García, president of SEPS, blames the children’s breakfast alone for long working days on the part of parents “who exercise surrogate parenthood.” Not having breakfast has health consequences, since after eight hours of sleep the brain is in hypoglycemia “, something that affects school performance and produces a reduction in immunological capacity. In addition, according to Garcia, hypoglycemia can cause dizziness and seizures in children under 5 years. That’s why you have to eat a breakfast that contains 30 percent of its carbohydrate content , 30 percent fat and another protein .

The study is based on 1,000 interviews with Spanish parents and mothers with children between 0 and 12 years old. Said sample maintains that although 80 percent of the parents prepare breakfast every day, 32.6 percent give their children a piece of pastries every day – 65 percent of industrial origin. In addition, 12 percent of parents confess that since the beginning of the economic crisis they have been forced to modify their children’s breakfast routines. Of these, 45 percent indicate that the changes affect a smaller variety compared to 39 percent that ensures that since the beginning of the crisis consume more homemade pastries and 3.5 percent of parents admit that they have dispensed with breakfast for economic reasons.

Garcia has insisted that children should get up an hour before going to school, shower in the morning and sit down for breakfast for about 30 minutes as a family and without the TV on. “What is most consumed today is milk with cookies, there are children under six who drink between 15 and 20 cookies and that’s not healthy either.” That’s why Garcia has recommended that children take about 100 grams of milk daily , preferably skimmed, dyed with cocoa and alternate with malted cereals , and about 25 grams of nuts. “In addition, you have to add 50 grams of bread with olive oil and tomato, or butter and jam, and a fruitAs minimum. The educational and nutritional problem belongs to the parents. Culture is acquired and today children eat a la carte. They should eat what there is, according to some rules, “Garcia added.

Russolillo has recommended integrating whole- grain products at breakfast and reducing the consumption of refined flours, as well as including fresh produce from the environment. García added that we must take advantage of the heterogeneity of food in Spain and apply the Mediterranean diet to daily life, something that will allow for a balanced, healthy and much cheaper diet. Teaching children to eat healthy is essential in the family.
