Ericsson, Einride and Telia work on the development of sustainable autonomous trucks with 5G

The companies Ericsson, Einride and Telia are working on the development of Sustainable Autonomous Trucks whose communication system will be based on a 5G network and for this they are launching this technology in a DB Schenker facility in Jönköping (Sweden).

The idea is to create a transportation ecosystem with fully electric and autonomous vehicles , in which the Ericsson firm through Ericsson Radio System and Ericsson Cloud Core for 5G will provide connectivity to Einride’s autonomous T-pod vehicle, which currently operates in continuous form in the facilities of DB Schenker.

These companies, based on 5G network technology, benefit from their low latency and high capacity characteristics, and they are on the path of other companies that are convinced that the 5G will be fundamental in the transport of the years to come .

According to these companies that work together on this project, Einride’s T-pod truck, with its autonomous system and the 5G, can potentially replace more than 60% of the transport fleet that transits the routes today and with the addition of being a sustainable and competitive alternative.

What does 5G mean for telecom operators? According to a report by Ericsson about the business potential offered by the 5G technology: “it shows a revenue opportunity of 619,000 million dollars for telecommunications operators in 2026. ”

Speaking about this project the CEO and founder of Einride, Robert Falck, said:

Our mission is to lead the sustainable transition of road freight transport. 5G provides the connectivity and reliability we need to safely introduce the T-pod on public roads, paving the way for a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions and the elimination of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

For his part Ewald Kaiser, Director of Operations of DB Schenker, commented:

This pilot is a milestone in the transition to an intelligent transport system that will be safe, profitable and sustainable. Autonomous and all-electric trucks on public roads are no longer a dream, but are happening right now. Thanks to our partnership with Einride and connectivity through Ericsson and Telia, we are at the
forefront of this great transition.

Also and on 5G technology the Director of Technology of Telia Sweden, Mats Lundbäck, pointed out:

The 5G is a very interesting technology that will allow new sustainable business opportunities and create value for consumers. Together with our partners, we are building a powerful ecosystem that will have a profound impact for customers and society as a whole.

Finally, who also spoke about the project was Åsa Tamsons, Director of the Area of Technology and New Business of Ericsson, who commented the following:

A paradigm shift is taking place in the transportation industry. 5G, with its high speed data and ultra low latency, is driving a new world of
autonomous vehicles that takes fleet management to the next level. The Einride transport solution is a perfect example of how 5G technology can boost
profitability, improve safety and create a sustainable future.
