Although when you buy a product on Amazon you have the right to qualify it and receive the verified buyer label, if you are an Employee of the company that manufactures the product, you have still bought it, it is against the rules to qualify and comment on that product.
This is what several Facebook employees did, awarding 5 stars and commenting favorably on Portal, receiving the Verified Purchase tag.
This was discovered by Kevin Rose , Technology Editor of the New York Times, on the product page on Amazon when he was struck by the fact that several of the people who made reviews gave 5 stars.
Rose started to see the names and several of them coincided with Facebook employees as you can see in the following example, the first image is of the Facebook profile of Facebook employee, the second is the review of a person with the same name and so on According to Rose there are several:
Of course there is the possibility that these are not the same people, but while there may be a couple of cases this is too coincidental, this fact was indirectly confirmed by a Facebook executive. After the tweet of Kevin Rose denouncing the fact, the Vice President of Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality of Facebook, Andrew “Boz” Bosworth ( @boztank ) responded by pointing out among other things that they will ask employees to remove the reviews:
Neither coordinated nor directed from the company. From an internal publication at the launch: “We, unequivocally, do NOT want Facebook employees to commit to leaving reviews of the products we sell to Amazon.” We will ask you to remove them.
In Amazon’s rules regarding reviews, the store says:
To preserve the integrity of the content of the Community, content and activities consisting of advertising, promotion or solicitation (whether direct or indirect) are not allowed, including:
- Create, modify or publish content with respect to your products or services (or those of your relatives, close friends, business partners or employers).
