Technology of HPE and Aruba significantly improves the experience of the Ryder Cup 2018

This week we traveled to Paris, France, invited by HPE to know all the work and technology behind the 2018 Ryder Cup , the golf tournament that takes place every two years and in which 24 players of the best players of Europe and the United States meet in games between two players for points, which at the end of the 3 days of the tournament add up and the team (Europe or the United States) that manages to obtain more is the champion.

This year’s tournament is taking place at the Le Golf National, a 150-acre golf course where over the course of the week it receives approximately 51,000 people, or 250,000 in total, as they are not only the 3 days of the competition, also and as in other big tournaments around the world in the previous days the players practice, play with celebrities from the show business, sports and more. Also in the Ryder Cup, the captains of the teams that participated in previous years usually play.

Added to the previous public we have the people who follow the tournament through TV, which add more than 620 million per day around the world.

The European Golf Tour has been working with the HPE and Aruba platforms, a company of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, for 10 years and this year the Ryder Cup reached a collaboration agreement with these two companies to provide a new WiFi experience, which includes hardware, software and other services.

This edition of the Ryder Cup marks the first time in history that the golf course will be completely connected anywhere on the premises, which will allow each day, those 51,000 viewers enjoy connection to the network for free.

But it is not only about improving the experience with the wireless infrastructure, but also HPE , Arubaand the partners are helping in the operational needs, among which are updating the score of the individual competitions in real time, just at the moment of occurrence and until the monitoring of the performance of the players.

This collection of data that is made through 140,000 data collection points, distributed through the Le Golf National, offers a lot of important information for the future and not only for the organizers,

Also for the technicians and captains of the teams, for the players and even for the spectators and all those who watch the tournament through the TV.

Other services based on this, include location-based smart services, which can be merchandise offers, places where those stores that sell the products would be best located, localized commercial notices, interactive maps and even live transmission within the course, for to be able to see what happens in other places of it.

Of the 140,000 data collection points, 20,000 are only destined to collect the score of the competition.

Everything is complemented by a mobile application that offers many features and the possibility for tournament sponsors and partners to serve content to users, as well as offers and commercial announcements, all based on their location on the premises.

Entering the more technical terrain of this, the network architecture deployed by HPE is based on a core, access, and edge topology.

HPE installed more than 650 Aruba Wi-Fi Access Points, 130 Distribution & Edge switches, dual resilient data centers with HPE DC switches, and HPE VMware virtual computing platform. The experience also includes Aruba Bluetooth Beacons, installed alone in different places such as in the bag of golf clubs that carry the caddies and also in the access points.

All this together will provide a significant amount of very important data for the analytics and reporting platform of the Ryder Cup, all through Aruba Analytics and Location Engine (ALE).

Personally we tested the Wi-Fi of the event and at all times it responded very well and above all in a fast way. The test we did was to move to different places, we entered the stores and other constructions of the golf course and at no time saw a sharp decrease in speed between one place and another, although on the 18th hole at a time when they were playing his round two captains of both teams, where many viewers were concentrated, several of which were using the WiFi network.
