Charity “Bitcoin” Donates $5 Million to a Foundation for Medical Research

The Pineapple Fund , a charitable organization set up by a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous, has decided to donate $ 5 million to the Open Medecine Foundation (OMF).

The funds, which have been paid into a BitPay account before being converted into dollars, will help ” accelerate the necessary research on myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome, but also on other chronic diseases complex“. A second donation was made yesterday, this time on $ 4 million.

” Linda Tannenbaum, the CEO of OMF, believes that this extra donation was made following the gratitude expressed on Reddit and other social networks by patients with this syndrome, ” reports a blog article published on the site of the OMF, adding that thousands of messages have flocked to Reddit, Facebook or Twitter.

Little is known about the “Millionaire Bitcoin” Pine , the person behind the Pineapple Fund. He made his fortune by investing in digital currency in its infancy, and would be one of the 250 ” richest Bitcoin addresses ” in the world.

In a press release issued yesterday, OMF detailed how it intends to use these funds:

  • create a diagnostic test to detect chronic fatigue syndrome
  • benefit from better analysis of patient data
  • accelerate the development of a new technology that would better identify treatment options
  • conduct research to find a cure

The Pineapple Fund does not intend to stop there

This new donation could help, on its scale, to revive the emblem of the ecosystem crypto-currencies – while these are sometimes presented as assets that would benefit primarily criminals.

Ms. Tannenbaum founded the OMF to help her daughter, but also the millions of people who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The foundation brings together prominent members of the Scientific Advisory Board , including Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences .

Here’s what Pine said to justify his decision:

“I have known this syndrome for some time, and I know it is a serious disorder, which lacks funds for research and treatment. I received letters from renowned researchers who supported the OMF, and this helped me make my decision. “

This was not the first donation from the Pineapple Fund , which has already awarded $ 37 million to other charities. And he does not plan to stop there: Pine has committed to pay a total of $ 86 million.
