The Periodic Table of DevOps Tools V4 Category Highlight: AIOps/Analytics & Collaboration

Welcome to the first of many posts where we will highlight the categories that will be represented in version 4 of the Periodic Table of DevOps Tools! Today, let’s look at AIOps/Analytics and Collaboration.

AIOps/Analytics

With the increase in the number of Devops Tools, and the process and velocity of improvements through implementing DevOps practice and leveraging the latest cloud technologies, the need for greater visibility into what is happening throughout the software delivery lifecycle is critical. Enterprises everywhere are investing heavily in data analytics, data intelligence, and reporting dashboards. Software delivery is complex in the large enterprise and it is not uncommon to see 30+ tools used in the software delivery process that are disjointed. Something is needed to put the big picture together.

This joint category of AIOps/Analytics also includes monitoring, logging, and performance tools. We decided to add AIOps to this new joint category because there is just so much data that this is the logical place where AI and machine learning will start to make an impact and enable better insight into the data.

Continuous improvement, which is key to DevOps success, is dependent on the quality of this data. All vendors in this space are collecting data during some part of the software delivery process. How users utilize that data, either for reporting, dashboards, AI, etc. is how these tools differentiate from each other.

Collaboration

Collaboration tools help an organization, individuals, and teams work closer together. We reorganized this category as we had too many tools with the previous version of the Periodic Table of DevOps Tools and decided that some tools fit better in other or entirely new categories. This category now is solely focused on tools that bring people together to work on tech-related or non-tech-related tasks. All tools in this category have shown to help organizations stay aligned and communicate more effectively from planning to development through delivery.
