Ex-Haryana minister arrested for opening fire on mine workers

Chandigarh: Former Haryana Minister and Congress leader Nirmal Singh has been sent to judicial custody in the case related to opening fire following an altercation with a mining contractor at Belgarh.

Nirmal Singh is accused of firing at people in Belgarh, Yamunanagar at the sand mining site. He has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Nirmal is a member of the Indian National Congress. He was member of the legislative assembly Haryana Legislative Assembly for the years 1982, 1991, 1996 and 2005 from Naggal constituency.

Nirmal Singh was booked for Opening Fire on people after an altercation with a mining contractor and workers over the right to passage in the mining area in Yamunanagar. After the incident, the former Haryana minister and his associates were booked in a case of attempt to murder and dacoity and under the provisions  of the Arms Act at Khizrabad police station.

Nirmal’s four accused were arrested in this  regard. “They are being interrogated to ascertain details of the incident. Meanwhile, police teams are conducting raids to round up rest of the accused, including Nirmal,” Yamunanngar SP Rajesh Kalia was quoted as saying.

The police said that Nirmal Singh had fired 11 bullets during the incident. Some of the bullets had hit an earthmover and some were fired in air. The earthmover driver had a narrow escape in the incident, SP Kalia said.

Nirmal Singh reportedly owns a farmhouse in Belgarh village in Yamunanagar. The village falls in the mining zone and the vehicles pass through his farm. Nirmal Singh had recently dug up trenches on the passaage to prevent the vehicles from passing through his farm. The former minister said the land belonged to him whereas the complainant and mining contractors said that it was the village common land.
