As we near the end of January, there is still a lot more time to continue our resolutions of becoming a better traveler. Being a better traveler can include how to pack, where to go, and what to do but we have narrowed down a few tips and tricks that we feel can be applied to your next Maui Vacation!
First things first,
Take it Easy
That’s right. Relax, take a breather, or just chill for a second. It is so easy to overstuff your itinerary, especially when you have a limited amount of days, or traveling to a destination for the first time. Whether you’re trying to go on every hike that Maui has to offer, sunbathe on a dozen beaches, or try out a bunch of different restaurants, there simply isn’t enough time – or energy – in one day to possibly do every little thing. It’s easy to become overwhelmed in a new environment. Instead, we recommend giving yourself time to thoroughly enjoy a maximum of 2 activities a day. This way, you avoid having to rush and stress yourself out when it should be all about relaxation.
Eat Like a Local
One of the best parts of visiting a new place is the chance to discover a whole new culture, especially the food. Finding local delicacies in the places you visit can connect you to the culture on many different levels, as long as you are willing to try. Maui offers so many different types of cuisine, but the fun is eating like a true local. Stay away from major chains and try out local favorites such as spam musubi, loco moco, kalua pork, or chicken katsu. Who knows? You may end up finding your new favorite dish while creating an unforgettable experience.
Put your phone away and wander. In the generation we live in today, many of us get caught up staring at our phone, trying to find the picture perfect places on our screen. However, we recommend making your own discoveries and exploring by relying on your instincts, sense of direction, and interaction with strangers. But just a reminder, in order to get lost, you need time to do it, so always keep a day in your itinerary free to venture the unknown.
Another tip to traveling better is to simply come back. With so many places to eat and things to do, there is always a reason to justify another vacation. Maybe it was storming the day you wanted to take the Road to Hana, or you wanted to revisit a delicious food truck to try out their breakfast menu, or you remember a beach that has the best sunset views. Coming back allows room to create more long-lasting memories and a way to enjoy the same place, in a different way.
