Be Safe

For safety is not a gadget but a state of mind …

 Eleanor Everet

The ideology of Safety is not just about objects, but more so, a state of mind. It’s good to remember that simple yet effective steps create a safer workplace world for everyone. And something you can begin today.

Safe + Sound Awareness Week

The United States Department of Labor Occupational Department of Health Administration (OSHA) designates a Safe + Sound Awareness week each year. This year Safe + Sound Events will be held across the country from August 13 through August 19. Hundreds of partners throughout the United States and Internationally will participate in activities and events that promote safety in the workplace.

Individual companies that support the vision of a safety and health Program in every workplace in America are welcome to join each year.

How to Participate

If you would like to be involved or become a participant next year, check out this OSHA website page. Here you’ll find highlights and features including media platforms, proclamations and partner fact sheets and products. But, for now, it’s easy to implement a few safety-oriented practices to improve your program step by step.

The information on this website is pretty exciting stuff and should give you some inspiration to be a part of the big picture next year.

Raising Safety Awareness as a Nation

The purpose of Safe + Sound Week is to raise awareness and understanding of the value of safety and health programs. These programs include management leadership, worker participation and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards in workplaces.

Some suggested steps to get started include worker training, hazard identification, and worker input to maintain safety on the job.

Partner with the Best in the Biz

According to the July 12, 2018, OSHA Trade Release:

Over 200 organizations and businesses are partnering with OSHA to promote the importance of safety and health programs. Implementing a safety and health program is one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries and illnesses, and improve business. Effective programs can increase worker satisfaction, improve productivity, and reduce costs associated with workplace injuries

Raising Awareness Circa 1970

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. This is an employers obligation as enacted by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. OSHA’s Safe + Sound weeklong program is an event in which proper conditions for America’s working men and women are recognized and celebrated.

Safe + Sound week is also an opportunity to open a dialog on setting and enforcing standards, training, education, and assistance.

Safety as an All Inclusive Endeavor

Raising awareness and understanding the value of safety and health programs should include management leadership, worker participation and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards in the workplace.

Although there is no time to join this year’s weeklong event as an OSHA partner, there are steps you can take to participate on a local level.

Getting Started

If you are not quite ready to implement a complete safety and health program, there are still simple steps you can take to get started.

If you do these things, you’ll have a solid base as a springboard for a future structured and more concise safety program.

10 Easy Safety Program Beginning Steps

  • Take the lead. If you lead by example, you set precedence. Practice safe behaviors and discuss safety behaviors as part of your daily conversation with your team.
  • As you build rapport, collect hazard control ideas. Ask for ideas on improvements and follow-up. That’s important. Provide feedback during work hours. You may have to do some homework and research solutions.
  • Implement hazard control systems. Assign team members the task of choosing, implementing, and evaluating the solutions they have suggested.
  • Assure your team that you will always work with them to fix any hazards that could jeopardize their health and well-being. Establish safety and health as a core value.
  • Develop and communicate a procedure for team members to easily report injuries, illnesses, incidents, hazards, or safety and health concerns without fear of retaliation. Include an option for reporting hazards or concerns anonymously.
  • Train your team on the particulars of what you are looking for when reporting, identifying and controlling hazards in the workplace. Implement the same procedure when reporting injuries, illnesses, and near misses.
  • Be sure to ask for input on workplace changes. Before making significant changes consult with your team. Allow them the opportunity to identify the impact on safety or health issues associated with any major infrastructure or material changes.
  • Inspect the workplace with your team and ask them for their input on any activity, piece of equipment, or materials that may cause concern. Use a checklist.
  • Set aside a regular time to discuss safety and health issues with the goal of improving present programs and activities.
  • Address emergencies. Identify foreseeable emergency situations and develop instructions for each scenario. Arrange a meeting to discuss these procedures and post them in a visible location.
