Small But Mighty …

The U.S. Small Business Administration has designated April 29 – May 5, 2018, as National Small Business Week. Small business is defined as an organization with less than 500 employees. With 30 million small businesses in this country, small business is king of the hill. Accounting for 99.7 of all businesses, “small” is a force to be reckoned with.

But when it’s you. When it’s your small business and you don’t have 500 employees on board, you might not feel so strong and mighty. It’s a jungle out there, right? Survival within the first few years is critical. You may have the best cleaning technique ever created by mankind, but if no one knows, how is that going to work?

Small Business Matters

And as completely amazing it is that the world has changed as we instantly connect globally, the internet can complicate matters for a small business that only wants to reach people in their hometown.

Do you really need to connect with someone in the UK when your service is window washing? No. Local is the name of the game. But, how? Buying newspaper space, television and radio airtime, the magic mix of the past is passé.

Here’s the thing. We’re all in this together and honestly want to support each other. After all, small businesses donate 250% more to non-profits and community causes than larger businesses. At the end of the day, that’s what matters most.

Get Social

So, how will you make sure that you not only stay afloat but thrive in today’s warp-speed world?

Your customers, like it or not are fully tapped into social media platforms of every kind, from snap-chat to Youtube & beyond. But for your purposes, if you haven’t engaged already, try something new, or ramp up with at least one, or one more marketing tool.

We’ll save Snapchat for another day.

Be a Sport & Play the Game

Stay in the game. Have fun with it. Hire someone if you need to, but it’s a game worth playing, because you, dear neighbor and fellow business owner, matter. Without the entrepreneurial spirit we were born of, we’re missing the target. So, go get ’em. Show corporate giants who’s boss.

Here are a few social topics we think are a really good fit for small businesses: internet, digital users, lead generation, content marketing & blogging, social media marketing, and B2B techniques.

In this article we’ll talk about the internet, digital use and lead generation. Stay tuned for the next three topics to follow.

Here You Go

Internet

How did we survive before the internet? If you own a business, you must have an internet presence. That is all. If you don’t have a website. Get one. Do not think it isn’t relevant to you. It is.

If you have a website, keep it current, add updates and make sure your content is relevant to your business and target audience.

If you don’t have a website don’t be intimidated. There are many options to create one affordably, or even for free. Keep it simple, but please, please get a website. Remember, your competitor has a website and that’s how they get new customers and grow their business.

And by the way, most consumers check you out online before they make that call. Here’s a sad fact, 46% of small businesses do not have a website. 35% think their business is too small to invest in a website. Bad move. Get that website going, today. You can do it.

Digital User Experience

Got a website? Good. Make it mobile friendly. Everyone we know uses their phone throughout the day. A phone app may be a new customers’ first interaction with your business. In fact, highly likely.

So, make sure your website format configures well in a mobile application. A top-notch experience is critical to your success, it just is. So consider this:

  • Website page load time should not exceed two seconds;
  • First impressions are critical. Design elements and grammar determine your credibility within seconds;
  • An online consumer is 88% less likely to return to a site after a bad experience;
  • Mobile websites should be as well designed as your desktop version according to 85% of users, and
  • 57% of consumers will not recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site.

Lead Generation

Where do they come from? Of course, you have referrals, word of mouth, maybe email campaigns, Chamber mixers or paid advertisements. These are all really good things.

But, here’s the thing, once your website is active or rejuvenated by updating data with proper use of search words and original content (NO keyword stuffing – you’ll end up on Google’s blacklist), people will find you.

In an organic search, search engine results based on your keywords will populate the internet. What does this mean? Your consumers and audience will come to you. Wow, right?

So, take time to develop and update your website. Your target audience is looking for you.

Go Organic

Organic traffic is considered the most valuable traffic source. There are hundreds of reasons, but here’s one: 33% of clicks from organic search results go to the very first listing on Google. Keep in mind, this isn’t a magic bullet. The timeline is laborious and time-consuming. It’s worth it. Have patience.

There are a variety of very sophisticated programs, automated data, and big data professionals that are available for high-level lead generation. There will be time for that later.

As a small business, simply stay committed to sharing your message. Over time, your business will flourish organically.

Do you skip over the paid Google ads in preference of those who didn’t pay for their ad to show up in the prime time spot? See?

Remember, content is still king. Keep it fresh, customized, and laser customer-centric.
