Student Chef Cooks Tacos on Tailgate Grill for Car Show Guests

Nicholas Seeger, aka “Chef Jeff,” poses next to his 1978 Chevrolet El Camino at a recent Cars and Coffee Car show.

Wisps of smoke curled from the charcoal grill that was sizzling on the tailgate of the maroon 1978 Chevrolet El Camino. A small group of the curious lined up to see what was cooking amid the exotic cars at Cars and Coffee Palm Beach.

What they discovered was a young entrepreneur whose unconventional cooking demonstration was generating laughs, admiration and some pretty tasty tacos. Florida Fine Cars stopped by to find out more.

“I got a can of refried beans heating on the grill in the back, with some hotdogs on the front,” explained “Chef Jeff,” aka Nicholas Seeger, 18, of Davie, clad in a white chef’s hat and white chef’s jacket. “I’m grilling chicken hotdogs. Yeah, we’re REAL cheap.”

Chicken hotdogs and refried beans were the key ingredients to Chef Jeff’s hotdog tacos that were a big hit at Cars and Coffee.

Thing is, Nicholas wasn’t charging. Anyone who asked to sample his hotdog tacos got free eats and a healthy dose of humor.

He and his friends arrived at the huge, upscale car show at 8 a.m. and fired up their grill after strolling the grounds to “check out the competition.”

He found a lot but wasn’t too rattled.

“All these food trucks are trying to steal my business,” Seeger joked with a grin. “What we lose on quality we make up in uniqueness. I haven’t seen one other El Camino grilling chicken variety hotdog tacos.”

Free Hotdog Tacos are a Hit With Car Show Crowd

The chicken hotdogs were sliced up as taco filling. His secret ingredients also included a 32-ounce bag of Great Value Colby and Monterey Jack cheese (shredded, of course), some flour tortillas, Great Value picante sauce and chopped lettuce. Applewood chips added a little bit of smoked flavor to the meat.

Fresh lettuce, picante sauce, flour tortillas and refried beans were part of Chef Jeff’s taco creations.

Seeger was definitely in a category of his own.

And the smoking tailgate grill just a stone’s throw away from a line of pricey Lamborghinis, Audis and McClarens was definitely turning some heads.

“I think it’s Florida at its best,” said Belle Glade resident Adrian Gonzalez, 19, as he bit into a sizzling hot free hotdog taco. “And the food, it’s a thumbs up!”

Seeger is a student at Broward College who works as a barista at The Grille at Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale. He was surprised how many people stopped by to eat, chat and admire his El Camino and his vintage grill.

“I never thought I’d get this much attention,” Seeger said. “I feel like the King of the World,” he joked. “Everybody’s gotta come have one of my tacos.”
