AS I AM: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DJ AM Documentary

I had chance to catch the Showtime documentary on DJ AM last week and although just one person, I can still give it two thumbs up.

Unlike other recent documentaries I’ve seen on stars we’ve lost to Drug Abuse, specifically Kurt Cobain (Montage of Heck) and Chris Farley (I Am Chris Farley; As I Am focuses as much on what he did in recovery as it does on what made him special. The recovery aspects of the film benefit from the fact that DJ AM was never a household name per se; more famous among the music business elite than the general public. It is equally important that while it sheds light on how he slipped into drug abuse, how he approached recovery, and why he ultimately relapsed and overdosed; it also highlights the fact that he really only blossomed into a giant among his peers after he attained sobriety.

It’s a heartbreaking story that will enlighten viewers on why he was an important artist, how an addictive personality can channel that trait into recovery, and why people in recovery have to be ever vigilant. I am not trying to give anyone a free pass on relapse, but you would be hard pressed to find a more powerful set of circumstances that acted as a trigger for Adams eventual fall back into drug abuse and overdose.

If you have the time, check out AS I AM: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DJ AM Documentary. It’s one of the best I have seen.
