Hidden Sporting Talents

Latest news from Renaissance sponsored Wynnum Croquet Club has again highlighted the depth of sporting talent hidden among Renaissance residents who take up the challenging activity of Croquet.

Wynnum club recently held its annual Christmas Party/Trophy Presentation day mixed in with novelty events on the courts that presented even the most talented club players with head shaking difficulty.

From a membership of 52 the presentations were conducted amid a sea of food with local member and club patron Councillor Peter Cumming doing the honours assisted by Club Captain Geoff Hull.

During the course of 2015 three Golf Croquet events (Club Singles Open, Club Singles H’cap, Ladies Singles H’cap) along with the Club Achiever Award were conducted. Renaissance residents Gordon Giles, Bruce Duffell, Geoff Hull (L to R) took out all three awards in which they were eligible. On any given day the three as 1st Div players are capable of recording wins over each other which was played out during the Championships, with strong rivalry over the extended round robin format. Gordon and Bruce played a cracker final in the Club Open with Gordon prevailing in a best of three un-timed games, getting up in two in 2hrs 35 mins, with both games going to “Golden Hoop”.  Geoff’s final against club veteran Barry Nicholl was as much a test of mental stamina as it was individual skills, with Geoff taking out the honours in a hard fought 3.5hr marathon.

In 2016 it is hoped to have Association Croquet and Ricochet become part of the annual awards.  With Gordon choosing Ricochet as his second discipline to Golf Croquet, as is the same with Geoff, and with Bruce choosing Association Croquet as his preferred second discipline, plus Deirdre Giles showing excellent skills around the courts in Golf Croquet, there becomes the challenge for these four residents of Renaissance Retirement Living to chase hard in all 5 events.

Also kicking the year off in 2016 is the Qld Golf Croquet Open Championships being held locally at McIlwraith Croquet Club. The cream of the State players will be contesting as well as Gordon and Geoff making up the numbers.   Spectators are always welcome to cheer on their players. Renaissance supporters would be a great added feature to this event. See you there!
