#BAE (Build and Eat) & Maerry:Me @ Bangsar

Not sure if you noticed but there's a new restaurant called #BAE (Build and Eat) just across Telawi Square. It's hard to miss it because of its peculiar signboard and eye-catching colors. For a contemporary restaurant, and moreover, in Bangsar, you would expect the prices to be up there. As it turned out, their menu actually offers plenty of budget eats which are only RM2.50 each.

Most of the items in the RM2.50 menu are made up of local Malaysian favourites such as Nasi Lemak, mee siam, assam laksa and ayam masak merah, while the rest constitutes a couple of familiar Asian dishes. Basically, what #BAE has done is shrunk the portion size of the food so you could try a variety of dishes in a single sitting.
If you are here with family or a group of friends, you can also opt for their specials, which are served in normal portion sizes. The choices include satay, fried chicken, mutton curry and even lamb shank!

To be honest, we were expecting the food to come in 1 mouthful portion (boat noodle size) as a trick to get you to order more. But we were pleasantly surprised by the decent portion size which felt more like tapas portion. Unless you are starving, you will only need three to four servings to feel satiated.
We were not able to find fault with #BAE's Nasi Lemak. It tasted authentic and the sambal packed heat just the way we like it. The amount of rice you get is similar if not more than what you get in a standard nasi lemak bungkus, with the exception that it comes fresh and warm.

The nasi lemak was our top favourite at #BAE and which you can compliment with meat dishes like Ayam Masak Bali (spicy!) and Ayam Masak Merah.

Mee Kuah Ketam – noodle in a tangy crab broth with shredded chicken and crab meat floss. The flavor is pretty spot on with what I used to eat in Bukit Mertajam, not bad at all.

Indomee – exactly like how one would cook it at home. The half boiled egg was perfectly executed!

I am no expert when it comes to Mee Soto, and personally I have never really understood the appeal behind this noodle. But for RM2.50 we didn't mind giving it a try. The soup had a good depth of chicken flavor, it's quite tasty alright.

Assam Laksa – hot and sour like it's meant to be but I guess some would prefer the soup to be a little bit richer.

Keropok Ikan – nothing fancy about this, simply a snack great for nibbling and munching. From what I was told they are getting the raw fish crackers from Terengganu, so they are definitely doing it right.

For the specials, it's hard to go wrong with their satay (5 sticks @ RM15.90, add RM1 for beef). I am quite picky when it comes to satay and I am glad to say that #BAE's chicken-thigh-only satay managed to impress. Props to them for making a kick-ass chunky peanut sauce too, one which I did not mind slurping directly.

While the Ayam Goreng Berempah @ RM12.90 might not be able to replace your favorite from the street vendor, it's undeniably delicious, not oily, tender with a paper-thin crispy skin.

Drinks at #BAE are served by Maerry:Me, an alcohol-free bar that whips up colorful Malaysian and other fruit-based drinks. The beverages are available in Maximum BOMB (1 litre serving, RM15) or Kahwin @ RM11.20, in which the latter ‘marries' two different flavours of drinks into a partitioned drinking cup.

Maerry:Me's drinks have quirky names and obviously, they were designed to be Instgrammable. But more importantly, they provide a fun and sharing experience with your dining companions. We tried two Kahwin cups – one with Mango Tango Mango Balls and “ABC no D”, the other a mix of Cendol and 3 Layer Pandan tea.

Since cendol and ABC are two of our beloved local desserts, we have to be strict critics and say that both flavors did not meet our expectation. But the good thing is that after we provided our feedback, the person in charge quickly replaced them and made adjustments based on our feedback. Eventually, the drinks tasted better and although still not great in my books, the level of customer service we received was commendable.

With a vast choice of affordably priced options, any time of the day is a good time to drop by #BAE. Whether it's for breakfast, lunch, tea break or dinner, you can customize the meal according to your personal diet, group size and budget.
