I, Rena, was recently interviewed for an awesome Podcast, Coming Out of the Fire. I share about being sexually abused by my uncle. It’s a powerful and frank discussion (don’t worry, we skipped the gory details). We really did get to explore the impact it made on me. You can click here to listen to it.
I wanted to share with you my experience around being so open and Visible. I feel it’s very important for me to share my story because it’s the foundation of my passion. I tell how it took me years to come to this conclusion: I believe that my uncle, the man who sexually abused me, did not set out to harm me. In fact, I believe he was completely oblivious to the deep, lasting, negative impact he’d have on me. For that reason, I’ve become passionate about making people aware of how they are impacting other people.
So I have a Message to share and I got to share it with a lot of new people I don’t normally get to talk to. That’s great right? But when the podcast was posted and became available last week, I totally FREAKED OUT. My anxiety level was through the roof. I felt exposed and vulnerable. What would people think?
That’s the funny thing about making a difference in people’s lives in general and being visible doing it in particular. Sometimes it’s just really uncomfortable. Our inner child feels unsafe and suddenly we are wanting to hide out and play small instead. It’s a strange dichotomy balancing being visible and feeling safe.
Ultimately, I’ve decided that the opportunity to positively impact other people through my message is worth the risk of being seen and perhaps getting some negative feedback. In the last month and a half, I’ve spoken at the Sacramento Speaker’s Network and posted that video to YouTube, submitted a final draft for my chapter on a compilation book,: Women on a Mission: Stories of Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs, and now this podcast. I’m getting my story out more and more. I’m trusting people will be blessed by it.
Just so you know, in case you struggle with the same thing, it’s not as easy as it looks.
So, If you get a little freaked out when you are exposing yourself for the benefit of other people, know that you are in good company. I’ve been told it gets easier. I’ll let you know when I experience it myself. Until then, just like I am doing, keep sharing of yourself. Keep sharing your message that can transform lives. Take the important life lessons you’ve learned out into the world. There is a great need for your unique and positive impact!
