Careers in Aging Week: Let's Celebrate Sunrise Team Members!

Every year during the first full week of March, organizations across the world observe Careers in Aging Week, a celebration of the wide-ranging career opportunities available in the field of aging.

Working with seniors is a fulfilling, mutually rewarding experience perfectly suited for people with natural serving hearts. At Sunrise Senior Living, we know that our team members are at the heart of the best-in-class personalized care that we provide to residents and families.

From our early beginnings, Sunrise has been committed to fostering a caring, family-like atmosphere for our team members. We work together to champion quality of life for all seniors by adhering to our Team Member Credo, which directs team members to embrace diversity, encourage team spirit, and show respect for all.

“We are fully invested in preserving Sunrise’s rich culture, as well as offering new opportunities for team members to succeed and fulfill their personal goals,” said CEO Chris Winkle.

This mission-driven, for-all culture is at the heart of why Sunrise was named by Great Place to Work® and Fortune as No. 7 on Best Workplaces for Aging Services list in 2018, the first year the list has been released.

The survey included 162,000 employees in senior housing and in-home care agencies in almost all 50 states. Employees answered 60 questions designed to measure the work environment in areas such as respect, fairness, innovation, and leadership.

Culture and mission helped Sunrise earn one of the highest Trust Index scores in the industry. That’s important to seniors and their families because, according to Fortune research, higher trust scores are linked to better care for residents.

Several Sunrise team members spoke about why they enjoy working each day in an active, ethical environment with the ability to learn and grow.

“At Sunrise, I feel like my perspective is valued by leaders at all levels, even when my perspective may be different than others,” says Shayne Ginder, who’s been with Sunrise for nearly five years and serves as the director of the organization’s continuous improvement program. “Everyone comes from a different background and brings a unique skillset to the table.”

Sophia L., an executive assistant, immediately felt like part of the Sunrise family when she joined the organization just under six months ago. “I prefer to work for a company that has a product or service that I can believe in, and I feel in my heart of hearts that I have that here at Sunrise,” says Sophia. “And, the team members at Sunrise are friendlier and more welcoming than any place I’ve ever worked!”

Stephanie Hunter has led Sunrise of Naperville, IL, as the community’s executive director for about a year. “Sunrise just has a feeling—a warm, loving, embracing feeling,” she says. “I take great pride in my work, more than anything knowing that our team makes a difference each day. And aside from knowing I am a part of an organization that is doing the right thing, there is so much opportunity for growth as an individual.”
