Capitol RecordsA remastered version of Don McLean's classic 1971 album American Pie was reissued on vinyl recently for the first time since the record was originally released. The album was remastered from analog tapes at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles by veteran engineer Robert Vosgien.
American Pie was released in October 1971 and, of course, features the epic tune of the same name, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. Using Buddy Holly's tragic death in a 1959 plane crash as a launching point, the song "American Pie" metaphorically traces the history of rock 'n' roll from the 1950s through the turbulent '60s. The album also includes another big hit for McLean, "Vincent," an homage to the painter Vincent Van Gogh.
In other news, McLean will hit the road next week on a new U.S. trek dubbed the American Troubadour Tour. The singer/songwriter has more than 20 dates overall on his schedule, which spans from an August 13 performance in Nashville through an April 7, 2017, show in Alexandria, Virginia. Among the concerts are two joint gigs with Judy Collins and a show with Boz Scaggs.
McLean was in the news last month when he pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges stemming from a January 2016 incident involving his then-wife Patrisha. The 70-year-old singer paid a fine and has agreed to avoid contact with Patrisha, who was granted a divorce from Don in June.
