The Beatles’ Three “Anthology” Compilations Now Available on Streaming Services

Universal Music EnterprisesStarting today, The Beatles' three Anthology collections, originally released in 1995 and '96 as two-CD sets, became available on a variety of major streaming services. The compilations feature rarities, outtakes and demos spanning the band's entire career, and also include two tracks -- "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" -- based on demos recorded by John Lennon in the late 1970s and then completed in 1995 by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Anthology 1, 2 and 3 were issued, respectively, in November 1995, March 1996 and October 1996, and all went to #1 on the Billboard 200. To date, the collections have sold a respective 8 million, 4 million and 3 million copies in the U.S.

Anthology 1 features "Free as a Bird" as its first track. The song reached #6 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and also won the 1996 Grammy Award in the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal category. The rest of the compilation spans from 1958 recordings by the pre-Beatles group The Quarrymen through tracks the Fab Four recorded in October 1964.

Anthology 2 boasts "Real Love" as its lead track, which also was issued as a single, peaking at #11 on the Hot 100. In addition, the collection includes Beatles recordings that span from February 1965 through February 1968.

Anthology 3 features tracks from the Beatles' final years together, spanning from May 1968 through January 1970.
