Entertainment One MusicFounding KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has announced official details about his upcoming studio album, a star-studded covers project called Origins Vol. 1 that includes contributions from Frehley's old band mate, Paul Stanley, as well as from Slash, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, and Lita Ford. The 12-track collection will be released on April 15, and features Ace's take on songs by bands that influenced and inspired him.
Stanley lends his vocal talents to a rendition of Free's "Fire and Water," marking the first time he and Frehley have been featured on the same studio recording since the 1998 KISS album Psycho Circus.
While the media has the perception that Frehley isn't on the best of terms with ex-band mate Stanley, Ace tells Rolling Stone that's not the case. "We've always been friends," he says. "The press seems to amplify negativity. I guess it makes good copy."
Origins Vol. 1 also features covers of songs by Cream, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, Thin Lizzy, Steppenwolf, and The Troggs, as well as new interpretations of three KISS songs. Slash appears on a rendition of Thin Lizzy's "Emerald," Ford sings and plays lead guitar on a version of The Troggs' "Wild Thing," and McCready adds his guitar skills to a new take on the Frehley-penned KISS tune, "Cold Gin." Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 also is featured on a couple of tracks.
Frehley tells Rolling Stone he's "really thrilled with the whole [Origins Vol. 1 album]," adding, "I'm excited about it, and probably somewhere down the road there'll be a second volume." You can check out Ace's cover of the Cream classic "White Room" now exclusively at RollingStone.com.
Frehley will be supporting the album with a North American tour that's currently is mapped out from a February 26 concert in Houston through an April 16 show in Poughkeepsie, New York.
