Burien’s Severe Weather Shelter is seeking volunteers to help during the warmer months of summer, including extreme heat and poor air quality, usually due to smoke from wildfires.

Summer Weather is Coming

“The shelter will be partnering with the City of Burien to keep people safe and healthy,” organizers said. “We are still working out exactly what that will look like, but what we know is that we will once again be looking to you, our community, to help us make it happen!”

In the case of extreme heat, organizers will be looking for people who can volunteer to help them host and feed guests, but instead of evenings and overnights, they say they’ll mostly be looking for folks who can help out during the day, when we are at our hottest. 

In the case of poor air quality, it is likely that the shelter will be operating 24/7 during those periods and could really need your help.

They are also be looking for people who can donate goods.

Training Opportunity is June 2

There are a few openings left to join Burien City Staff for a Mental Health First Aid Training on Friday, June 2, 2023. This is an opportunity to learn about mental health and how to respond to a person in crisis, along with fellow Burien Severe Weather Shelter partners and volunteers.
