The City of Burien announced on Thursday (Jan. 4) that it has hired Colleen Brandt-Schluter to serve as the City’s first full-time Human Services Manager.
Her first day will be on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018.
“Our City Council has taken an important next step in better serving our most vulnerable residents,” Burien City Manager Brian Wilson said. “A full-time Human Services manager will improve the coordination, quality and availability of essential human services in Burien.”
Burien recently became a Community Development Block Grant Joint (CDBG) Agreement city, which increases the amount of federal funds available for human services. The Human Services Manager will manage the CDBG reporting requirements, as well as coordinate the City’s annual grant funding to local service agencies. The human services manager will also support the work of the City’s new Human Services Commission, which advises Council on human services issues and policy.
Brandt-Schluter currently serves as the Human Services Manager for the City of SeaTac. While in SeaTac, she has worked with the Human Services Advisory Committee, managed the City’s biannual grants program, managed Community Development Block Grant funding, managed a minor home repair program, advised the City management and Council on emerging community needs, and provided direct service to residents. She also serves on regional and sub-regional boards and committees.
Prior to her work in SeaTac, Brandt-Schluter worked for the Highline School District as a community engagement coordinator and manager of a community learning center. She also was appointed to serve on Burien’s Human Services Commission.
Brandt-Schluter has a degree in Organizational and Interpersonal Communication from the University of Washington and attended Evergreen High School.
“Colleen brings extensive experience and community relationships from her work for the City of SeaTac and Highline School District,” City Manager Wilson added. “We are fortunate to gain her talent and expertise for the City of Burien.”
