Jamshedpur, June 23:

Four days after being beaten up by a mob on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle, a man has died in a Jharkhand hospital.

According to the relatives of the victim, he was returning to his home in Kharsawan district from Jamshedpur along with three friends.

They were barely five kilometers away from home when they were accosted by a mob and accused of being members of a gang of motorcycle thieves.

While two of them managed to escape, the victim was caught and thrashed mercilessly for around seven hours.

The incident took place in Jharkhand’s Seraikela Kharsawan district on June 18. The victim was later handed over to the police.

According to media reports, the victim was charged with attempt to theft and produced in a court that sent him to judicial remand.

The police admitted him to a hospital on June 22 after his condition worsened.

“Two of his accomplices escaped. But he was ill-treated by the villagers. When the police got the information, they went to the spot and took him in custody, along with the motorcycle,” Superintendent of Police Karthik S was quoted as saying by Scroll.in.

Apart from being beaten, the man was also forced to chant slogans like 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Jai Hanuman'.

The video of the incident soon spread on social media.

The victim's family have filed an FIR against those involved in the incident. They also allege that he died in police custody.

"A motorcycle theft took place and these people were passing by. So the villagers caught them and then beat him up very badly. There were two friends with him who ran away," a relative of the victim was quoted as saying by ANI.

"My elder brother went to see him at the Saraikela police station. But the officers threatened and shooed them away with lathis, saying 'You have come to talk for the thief'. They threatened to put him in jail as well. We were not allowed to meet him," he added.

"We want all the officials at the police station, the jail and all the villagers who beat him up to be charged".

One of the accused has reportedly been arrested.
