Reducing Methane Emissions is one of the key factors to help the fight against climate change. Yet how do we go about reducing methane emissions in the first place? Cattle and livestock are considered one of the biggest contributors to methane emissions. On a large scale we can reduce methane emissions by improving the production of cattle. By improving the productivity of cattle and improving their overall diet we can enhance the output we get from the cow (i.e. beef and milk), but also reduce methane emissions. By adding dietary additives such as coconut oil, the fermentation process in the gut of the cow can be condensed, which helps reduce the overall production of methane in a cow. However while these sound good in theory; the chances are many of us do not work directly with cows on a daily basis.
There are smaller, albeit significant ways you can help push cattle producers to make such decisions. Since one of the leading factors of methane emissions is cattle production, one of the biggest steps you can make is simply eating less meat, and possibly even becoming vegetarian or vegan. Although this might seem like a stretch for some people, eating less meat can have a healthy impact not only on the environment, but on your health.
