Holly James – IT Project Manager to Health Coach

career coach manchester

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do in your career at the moment?

Sure! Let me start by asking you something. Have you ever tried losing weight and didn’t know what to eat, which diet to follow or lost some weight but couldn’t keep it off? Does your eating get out of control when you get emotionally overwhelmed? Are you too tired to exercise consistently?

I work to remove blocks that are keeping you from reaching your Health goals in areas such as achieving optimal weight, reducing food cravings, managing stress, increasing sleep, and maximizing energy. I help you implement lasting changes that will improve your energy, balance and health.

I practice a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means I will look at how all aspects of your life are interconnected and affect your health and well-being.

All this to say, I am a Health and Lifestyle Coach!

What did you do before you started this new role?

I was a Project Manager for an IT company.

What made you decide to make the change?

Working for 10 years in a corporate environment, I saw first hand how many people sacrifice their health and well-being for their careers. Many ended up sick, burned out and feeling and looking crummy, not to mention had trouble in their relationships. I myself burned out and ended up with chronic health issues for those exact reasons.

It is my mission now to promote health and its importance in all areas of life. You CAN have it ALL. You can be healthy and have a rewarding career, fantastic relationships and live vibrantly. I want to help others get to that place.

How did you get started with your new business?

It has been brewing for many years. I stopped and started it many times along the way. Until I finally ended up burnt out and came down with Pneumonia after a Business trip to New York City. It was sitting in the emergency room on the way home from the airport where I told the Universe “Ok, I hear you! YES! It’s time to make a change!”

A few weeks later I left my job and went full steam ahead with my coaching practice.

What challenges did you face?

Leaving a six figure career which I had sacrificed a lot to build was very hard to let go. But I realized I could either stay and be sick and unhappy or let it go, and move onto the next chapter of my life fueled with desire, purpose, and passion.

There is a time for everything, but to go somewhere new, you must leave the old place behind.

How did you overcome those?

In one word, FAITH.

I spend time every day focusing on faith. I get there and stay there by using meditation, reading books that get my mind focused positively, surrounding myself with positive people and reminding myself of what I CAN do, rather than what I can’t do.

What has been the best bit about making the change?

The best part about making the change is feeling alive again. I am feeling a new sense of purpose and meaning in my life and my business has allowed me to grow and challenge myself.

Why set up your Current business ?

My business is an extension of myself and all that I have been through in my life.

I suffered from an eating disorder and compulsive eating for many years, which was a terrible way to live. Helping people out of the bondage of that compulsive behavior is really rewarding for me.

What are your goals for the rest of this year?

My goals are to continue my private coaching work with clients, write a book, do more public speaking and get out there to help as many people as I can to have better lives by living more comfortably in their bodies, both mentally and physically.

What’s your favourite quote?

“The first step towards getting somewhere is deciding that you are not going to stay where you are.”

Holly is very right. So many people sacrifice their health and wellbeing for their careers for a number of reasons. I have seen this myself with my own clients and it’s why I am such a big advocate of taking time out and looking after your own wellbeing. Self-care should be non-negotiable – no matter how busy you are.
