Avro Lancaster Purrs To Life On A Summer Morning

Avro Lancaster Purrs To Life On A Summer Morning

The WWII era bomber comes to life in this mesmerizing clip.

I don’t know about you, but I could watch any world war tow piston engine start up and idle for days!
In this video clip, published on July 9th of 2012, an Avro Lancaster whose name is Just Jane sits so quietly on the ground that you can hear the birds chirping in the background. This lasts about a minute, then contrasts sharply with the awesome screaming engine noise that follows, as the plane’s propellers spin to a blur. Then, with all four engines running, Just Jane turns slowly around, and taxis down the runway on her tricycle landing gear.

Just Jane, whose serial number is NX611, was built by Austin Motors near Birmingham, UK in April of 1945. She was meant to be part of the RAF in the Far East, but Japan’s early surrender turned Just Jane into a surplus aircraft. So instead of being used for service, she ended up in storage until 1952.

In April of 1952, Just Jane was purchased by the French government. Then she was painted midnight blue and flown for maritime patrol. Ten years down the road, Just Jane was sent to Noumeau, New Caledonia, where she was painted white and used for air sea rescue and cartography. In 1964, she was presented to the Historical Aircraft preservation Society for an overhaul. Just Jane was then flown back to Great Britain.

Eventually, Just Jane was purchased by two brothers who has lost their brother at the Nuremberg raid in March of 1944. Just Jane now rests on their farm, as a monument to commemorate all of the men who served in Bomber Command.
