Wizards Mahinmi Buys In Cleveland Park

One of the NBA’s free agent stars is making his biggest local move off the courts, putting down roots in Cleveland Park. Ian Mahinmi, of the Washington Wizards, just paid $2.65 million for a recently renovated home in the neighborhood. The residence sold for $855,000 two years ago.  This news could bode well for the city, as the former center from the Indiana Pacers appears to be interested in living in the DC area for a while. His contract is worth $64 million, and provides a four-year deal with the team. Located in northwest Washington, Cleveland Park is well known for its late 19th century constructed homes, some of which are featured annually as part of the Cleveland Park Historical Society’s neighborhood house tour. The homes come in a variety of different styles popular during that period, most notably Georgian Revival, Mission Revival and Queen Anne style architecture. Other home styles later joined the mix of the neighborhood including the Tudor Revival and Prairie style. Eventually some late 20th century homes were constructed, lending to the area’s rich variety of architectural styles today. As well, the area also serves as a home to the distinguished William L. Slayton House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and boasts one of the first strip malls in the nation. Other admirable features of the neighborhood include the close proximity to Rock Creek Park, on the east side, plus the ease of access to the Cleveland Park Metro Station on the Red Line. Cleveland Park is located to the east of Idaho and Wisconsin Avenues, north of Woodley and Klingle Roads and south of Tilden and Rodman Streets. The main commercial corridor is Connecticut Avenue, followed by Wisconsin Avenue. The area is also home to the Art Deco Uptown Theater, a 1930’s theater made famous for hosting Hollywood premieres.
