Déjà Vu: EU Safety Group Confirms Safety of Aspartame Again

Looks like they get it across the pond: According to a report released last month, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) determined that “Aspartame and its breakdown products are safe for human consumption at current levels of exposure.” All I can say is, “Yeah,” followed quickly by, “but I’m not surprised.” Because EFSA announced a similar conclusion in 200.

The full, PDF of the 263-page 2013 Report is here, but you can get the gist of EFSA’s findings in their press release, which stated the following:
Following a thorough review of evidence provided both by animal and human studies, experts have ruled out a potential risk of aspartame causing damage to genes and inducing cancer. EFSA’s experts also concluded that aspartame does not harm the brain, the nervous system or affect behaviour or cognitive function in children or adults.
You can also check out this video featuring Registered Dietitian Robyn Flipse, who breaks down EFSA’s report even further.

It’s always reassuring to hear additional proof of the safety of an ingredient in one of my favorite diet beverages. And by additional, I mean on top of the mountains of already existing scientific evidence: More than 200 studies over the past 30 years have demonstrated the safety of aspartame. What more do you need to know, people?
So carry on with the confident consumption of your favorite diet sodas containing aspartame; I know I will! And let’s hear it for real science in Europe!
