We all found ways to get through the pandemic and come out the other side with some new, and often rather unique, pandemic hobbies. In Part 2 of our three-part series, Allstream staff share some of the pandemic hobbies and creative pursuits they’ve picked up in the last year and a half. (Read Part 1 here.) “I thought of walking or jogging in my neighborhood instead of doing cardio in my basement, as I love the outdoors. It started with 15 minutes of walking, which became 30 minutes, and then I started jogging 1K, then 5K and then 10K. Soon it was wintertime and temperatures were hovering around -15 degrees Celsius. So I started chalking out my plan for the Canadian cold. And guess what? Running is highly addictive, just like other sports. “After I became comfortable running in the cold, I took up the 6K x 30 days challenge in cold January, where you have to run a minimum of 6 kilometres every day for 30 days. It was such a nice feeling of accomplishment after I finished the challenge. The next challenge for me is to prepare for a marathon before the end of the year. They say about 0.5% of the world’s population has run a marathon. I want to join the club!” —Deepak Arora, Communication Technician “I grew a variety of hot pepper plants you typically can’t find at nurseries from seed. I have been doing this for a few years now, but this year I decided to overwinter two plants from last summer’s grow. At the end of the season, I will experiment with making different hot sauces. I will also dehydrate and grind some into powder to spice up any dish.” —Mike Nelson, Carrier Support Coordinator Lead  “My kids have been trying to get me to flip on the trampoline but I’m not quite there yet. It has, however, been a joy to watch them develop their skills and push their limits, and attempt (and land!) some crazy combinations. Kids have no fear!” —Amy Cameroun, Director, Customer Service & Billing Management “I recently started learning how to play some songs on the kalimba. I’m not very talented in music, so I chose an instrument that’s pretty simple to learn. I’m currently trying to learn how to play “One Summer’s Day,” the song used in the film Spirited Away.” —Ina Mauleon, Marketing Business Intelligence Analyst “I didn’t start a new hobby — I had to slow down on old ones and restart even older ones. I have gone back to refinishing furniture and helped out a neighbour who needed to redo an early piece. Now I’ve got the bug again and I have three projects on the go!” —Costa Chatjiantoniou, Director, Sales Enterprise “I started baking more often than usual — I’ve always wanted to bake a layered cake. I get my recipes from the Internet and watch lots of YouTube videos. I now bake almost every week as I’ve been getting orders from friends.” —Sarah Vongdeuan, Account Consultant “I’ve been at the end of a major home renovation for a while, but with the pandemic and being at home 100% of the time, I was able to get more done. Our basement is finally finished and we were able to bring our couches in from the garage to the new basement area. We had to break a wall down to get them in, but we did it!” —Maria Di Quinzio, Sr. Customer Service Representative Read Part 1 of our pandemic hobbies here.
