State Nomination Update: NSW Submission Window is Opened, Queensland Postpone the Nomination Program

Updated information is available for the state Nomination program in two of Australia’s states, New South Wales and Queensland. Meanwhile, the re-opening of the Queensland state nomination program has been postponed.

State Nomination NSW (New South Wales) Update

As per the update on 4 October 2021, the State Government of New South Wales has now opened the submission window for visa 491. The submission window will open for the whole month of October.

Suppose you have submitted a registration of interest (ROI) in August and have not received an invitation, in that case, you must submit a new registration of interest (ROI) if you still wish to get an invitation from the NSW State Government.

Here is some important information you must remember in regards to registration of interest (ROI):

  • The New South Wales State Government uses your SkillSelect EOI (Expression of Interest) to obtain important information, including your name, occupation, point score, email address, etc. If this information is not provided correctly, the New South Wales State Government will not consider your ROI.
  • Once your ROI is submitted, you cannot amend or withdraw it.
  • You can submit only one ROI during a submission window. It also applies where you are nominated in more than one occupation.
  • The New South Wales State Government cannot prioritise your ROI for any reason.
  • The online submission of ROI does not generate an email confirmation. Instead, you will receive a confirmation message on the online submission page.
  • Do not contact the New South Wales State Government’s office to ask for an update on your ROI

What is Visa 491?

Visa 491 or Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa is one of the visa subclasses under the General Skilled Migration program. Visa 491 is a provisional or temporary skilled visa that allows skilled workers to work and live in the regional area of Australia for five years.

Before applying for Visa 491, you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and wait for an invitation or a nomination from a particular state or territory government of Australia.

State Nomination Queensland Update

Previously, the Queensland State Government mentioned that they would open the state nomination program at the end of September 2021.

However, as per updated information on 4 October 2021, the Queensland State Government has to postpone opening its state nomination program due to a final round of industry consultation by the Queensland State Government to determine program requirements.

Furthermore, the Queensland State Government could not provide a specific opening date. The Queensland State Government envisages the program will open as soon as the consultation’s final round has concluded.

Important Notes for Skilled Visa Applicants

Following the NSW and Queensland state nomination program update, below are some important notes you must notice.

Important Notes about State Nomination

If you wish to migrate to Australia on a skilled nominated visa, such as visa 491, you must meet Australia’s state nomination requirements. Please be advised that each state has different requirements. Hence, having a high point in your EOI (Expression of Interest) is not enough. You must meet the state nomination requirements to get a higher chance to be invited.

Important Notes before Submitting ROI

As we know, a registration of interest (ROI) in some of Australia’s states is a new program that commenced during the Covid-19 pandemic. We notice most skilled visa applicants took the wrong step in submitting an ROI. One important note you must remember before submitting an ROI is, you must make sure that you have met the state requirements and have a high points total in hand.

It is important as you can submit one ROI only in one submission window. Additionally, meeting all requirements and having high points in hand will give you a higher chance of getting an invitation.

What does it mean to you?

If you have met the New South Wales state nomination requirement and have a high point for Visa 491, you might try to submit an ROI this month. It also applies to you who have submitted an ROI in August 2021 but have not received any invitation yet.

Additionally, both New South Wales and Queensland State Government remind all applicants that both states have a limited quota for the state nomination. Hence, it might be better for you to consider all other migration pathways available. You can explore your options by visiting the Department of Home Affairs official website or contacting a registered Australian Migration Agent near you.
