Prospective Marriage (subclass 300) holders will be Eligible for Travel Exemptions

An announcement was made by the department that PMV 300 Holders / Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) that applied or were granted the visa within a certain time period will now be entitled to apply for an inward bound Travel Exemption.

The announcement comes as many engaged couples have been unable to see each other as previous Travel exemption guidelines only allowed for De facto or married couples to apply for travel exemptions. Due to the fact that the PMV 300 is only a temporary visa as well it also did not allow the holders to be eligible for a travel exemption as permanent visa would have allowed.

Under the new directive those that have been granted a PMV 300 or have lodged at least 12 months before submitting the travel exemption request will be eligible.

Previous arrangement for PMV 300 Holders regarding Travel Exemptions

Travel exemptions have been required since the COVID-19 pandemic began as a way for the Australian government to be able to manage the situation more effectively by managing who is going in and out of the country.

Although travel exemptions were available under previous rules to “immediate family members” of Australian citizens or Permanent Residence which included spouses and de facto partners, this was not extended to spouse-to-be or PMV 300 holders.

Those that were holders of permanent visa were entitled to travel exemptions but as the PMV 300 is only a temporary visa holders were not entitled to the travel exemption through that route.

Updates on eligibility of travel exemption for PMV 300 holders

With the announcement by the Department, it now means that PMV 300 holders in certain circumstances will be able to be considered for a travel exemption. To be an eligible PMV 300 holder it means where the subclass 300 visa has been granted; and the subclass 300 visa application was lodged at least 12 months before submitting a travel exemption request.

This means if you applied for a subclass 300 visa on or before 18 August 2020, and you have now been granted your subclass 300 visa; you are eligible for an inward travel exemption on 18 August 2021.

You will have to request an exemption online and along with the request you must provide the evidence to support your claims. In this case proof of your grant or application and evidence of your relationship and engagement.

How the new exemption affects PMV 300 holders and applicants

This will be a major boost to those of you that are PMV 300 holders or applicants that fall into the relevant time period as it has most likely been an agonizing wait being apart from your partner and not being sure when you would be able to see them again.
