4 Trends in Human Resources Technology from HR Transform 2018

A few weeks ago the Resume.com team participated in the inaugural HR Transform event in Las Vegas. HR leaders and professionals, from startups to the enterprise level, all gathered to engage in dialogue about the trends in HR technology.

For us, it was an opportunity to truly understand the desires of HR professionals in the context of using technology to better their jobs (and to escape the Vancouver rain for a few days)! As our team continues to figure out ways to help employers simplify their hiring process, we took away four key insights and trends from the plenary sessions, workshops, and general networking discussions from sponsors and attendees.

1. Build A Strong Employer Brand Online Through Storytelling

By now we understand that a simple job post explaining the job description is not enough. Truly talented candidates see right through the generic marketing messaging, so employers are constantly trying to figure out ways to build a great brand presence online and to really engage the job seeker with their company beyond the job post.

In 2018, candidates need to feel connected to the company. Millennials are purpose-driven in their work and these job seekers look at an employer’s mission, vision, and values to try and resonate with the company before applying. With easy access to employer review pages like Glassdoor and Indeed, candidates place a certain level of trust in the opinions of present and past employees.

More employers are redeveloping their careers page to focus on employee ambassadors and their narratives. Current employees are the best people to describe company culture and the employer value propositions, so employee written testimonials can be very helpful! Video testimonials are even better.  Companies such as VideoMyJob or The Muse can integrate video on careers pages.

2. The Liquid Workforce is Growing

In the digital age of automation, the liquid workforce is a group of people who constantly re-train and adapt to changing work conditions.  With the rise of freelancing, remote, and contract work, candidates need to constantly train themselves to learn new and relevant skills. This, combined with jobs becoming more concentrated, reduces the talent mobility.

As people are less likely willing to move, companies need to find ways to bring the jobs to this talent segment. Employers must adapt to this behavior and be open to remote work opportunities instead of forcing them to be physically on site. This will, of course, depend on the nature of the job. Office work, for example, can all be done through the cloud and apps like Slack and Skype can provide the interaction between colleagues when necessary.

3. AI Requires New Skills Development

AI is going to change many professional roles. The idea is to empower people through technology to help them become better at their jobs, as well as help companies operate efficiently.

In the context of candidate sourcing, for example, it would typically take a recruiter 20 hours on average to proactively source candidates for one job. Using AI, through online scraping, we can now source candidate data in seconds. The recruiter has more time freed up to focus on value-add work.

Now, the recruiter role requires the skills of data analysis. Think of it like an evolution from the job title ‘recruiter’ to ‘talent scientist’!

4. Conversation with the UI is Next in Human AI Interaction

This point was taken directly from Dennis Mortensen, the CEO of x.ai. In his talk about The Future of Work with AI, Dennis discussed the evolution of Human AI Interaction – particularly the conversation of the UI. He anticipates that there will be a massive shift in verbally instructing the UI to perform a task, instead of manual clicking.

We’re already at the early stages of digital assistants such as Siri and Alexa and though there is a lot more work that needs to be done to improve voice recognition and instruction, we will see more apps developed to integrate the feature of users being able to converse with their platform. For HR Tech buyers and sellers, it won’t be too long before this feature evolves from a novelty to an expectation.

There is no better time to be in the HR Tech space than right now. From chatbots, AI career coaches, and even cryptocurrency benefits, these are just some features that companies are exploring right now to enhance their talent acquisition strategies.
