All aboard the time machine!! Do you remember the good old days when your grandparents would tell you many a fable? Those short tales ending with morals! All those Amar Chitra Katha books that you’ve read in your childhood! You still remember those, right? How? Because they were told in the form of stories! Why? Because they were interesting! There you’re! Smartly you’ve understood my point! That means you can easily fathom what I am saying.
You remember the stories because they were “stories” and were interesting! Similarly, for the interviewer to remember you and your interview, you need to make it interesting in the form of a story!
The interviewer, during the interview, may ask you a question “Tell me about a time when…” You are so overly prepared for everything else like the company’s mission, vision, history, your side of the story such as your expertise, etc. in five different languages!! But this question is so out of the ordinary!
“Let’s walk out from here! It’s not worth it!” you may think. But don’t do any such thing. There are ways to tackle this tough situation.
- Answer his/her question
Tell him/her a relevant story from your personal experience at workforce in the past. Don’t weave in tension and suspense the way an award-winning author would do. Just answer the question.
Tell him/her about a blunder you committed once, how you reacted to that situation and the measures you took to solve that problem.
- Present the context to him/her
After providing a concise answer, make it a bit expanding and explain what the background was. That doesn’t mean you tell him/her that you had an emesis that morning and showed groggy at work, then pressed a button accidentally and deleted your password thus having to spend an hour changing the password! Just give crucial information on what happened, why it happened, how it happened and how you solved it.
- Explain your role
How did you handle the situation? What was your role in solving the problem or getting the problem solved? Elaborate on everything specifically. No excuses and no shifting of blame on another individual!! Accept your fault gracefully. That will make the interviewer value you more.
- Resolution of the story
How did everything turn up to be in the end? Was it god for you or not? What were the results? What’s the outcome?
- Include the lesson precisely
Remember those tales your grandparents told you or you read at Amar Chitra Katha. Like any classic tale for children, add the moral of the story. What did you learn? What is there in that experience for anybody, including the interviewer to learn? The tortoise taught us “Slow and steady wins the race.” The crocodile and the monkey taught us how to keep stress under control when in panic. Just like that, what is the moral of your story (read experience)?
You must not make haste and walk out. Answer using these five methods.
