How to create a Resume that will help get notice and land the job that you want? You have to prepare two things when preparing for an interview: First you have to prepare yourself. Second you have to a kickass resume to get the job. You might be asking yourself if preparing a great resume is still worth the fuzz. The answer is YES!. So why do you have to do the effort? It is simple. Your new potential employer does not know anything about you and they would base the questions that they would be asking with what you have brought to your interview.

So what should you have in your resume that would actually matter and how to create a great resume? Here are some tips to create professional resume:

Your resume should only be one or two pages

Why do you need to limit to only two pages? Interviewers especially during mass hiring don’t have the time to read everything on your resume. So keep it short but make sure that the content is meaningful.

Check the font size and the the actual font

Don’t use comic sans and all those cartoon like fonts available on Microsoft Word. It has to be professional looking. Settle for either Calibri, Times Roman or Arial.

Your font size should not be too small. the preferable size is 12 .

Check your grammar and punctuation.

Ensure to use the spell check before printing out or sending your resume via email. Nothing says “not detail oriented” than a resume full of grammatical errors and incorrect punctuation.

What should you put on your Education section of resume?

Newly graduates are tempted to add all the educational details that they had since their primary school. Also they are tempted to add awards that are irrelevant. For example: If you got a loyalty award in high school for staying in your school from Primary school to high school, don’t bother adding it. It is irrelevant. Awards that you should add are Valedictorian, Salutatorian and honor awards. In college if you were a constant dean’s lister or got a cum laude award, that is plus points. Off course make sure that you really got those awards. They will surely check if what you put in your resume is actually true.

After years working, I have deleted the primary and secondary details in my Education section. I have replaced it with training that I have attended.

What should you put in skills?

You should careful with this section. First if you know any other language other than English, you may add it. However you have to keep in mind that you have to be fluent before adding that skill. You can’t put a language that you learned in college as an elective but you are not fluent with.

Don’t add that your computer literate. Everyone knows how to use a computer. It is not necessary to add that in your resume. If you have skills in MS Excel, powerpoint or other Computer programming language, make sure that you really know your stuff. They might test your skills especially if the job that you are applying for requires those skills.

Resume Format

The format of your resume should not be your typical black and white boring format. You can check resume format online or find a resume builder. There are some who actually makes a living being a professional resume creator. If you really want that dream job, you might consider hiring one. But off course you could do it by yourself but it would take a longer time.

Mind your words

You can spice up your resume by adding powerful words. For example under communicate, instead of writing that your fluent with english you can use ” Writes clearly and concisely” or “open expresses Ideas”. Another example is instead of writing good team player you can write “works well with others”. In this day and age there are so many resources that you can find on the internet about resume writing.

Closing Note

Creating a great resume is as equally important with the answers that you prepared for possible questions that you would encounter during interview. I have seen a lot of resume and most of them are not well done. To some it is just a piece of paper that hey are obligated to submit. Little do they know that there are added points when coming to the interview with a well prepared resume.
