Checklist for your Leadership Resume

Every professional needs a Resume and getting your Resume on-point is often easier said than done. Junior to mid-level professionals tend to find a way using internet help and resources but C-Suite Executives are the ones who struggle the most to find something that perfectly sums ups their rich career into a page or two. With competition for top posts higher than ever, and jobs sinking sharply your resume should be developed to convey your vision and thought leadership for the future.

Demonstrating Impact

Your Leadership Resume should be able to convey the impact that you have made in your professional experience. Simply listing bullets under the experience section would not be able to set you apart as a change-maker. Though mentioning skills and competencies, are vital to resume, what hits the nail for an executive is what  you are bringing in as leader.

Building your personal brand

It has become a common practice to share your thoughts and experience via social media or blogs, or through networking at conferences. These activities are certainly worth your time, but what if the recruiter does not see it in your Resume? Your values align with the company’s that you are applying to. But your does your resume resonate the same? If the answer is no, it is time to seek professional help and bring it on paper.

Once you bring everything on paper, make sure you are consistent across all channels. Consistency in terms of your values, should be paid special attention to because the process of hiring an executive involves multiple interviews, and happens across different mediums: phone calls, emails, social networks, face-to-face conversations, and so on. An inconsistent message will make you look like someone who is desperate for a job.

Telling a story

You are not only judged by what you say but also by how you say it. What is expected out of executives is a thoughtfully woven Story about who you are, what you do, and what makes you different. A tell-a-tale approach does not mean removing all professionalism out of your Resume, but demonstrating a smooth flow of thoughts while scribing your role mandate, strategic priorities, and scope, as well as how you met your targets, contributed to organizational objectives, and applied strong commercial acumen to add value. The story has to contain technical jargons and industry specific terms.

Offer the best

With mountains of experience in your arsenal, you need to be selective about what goes where in your story. You should prioritise on including facts and figures, the most relevant ones, as the highlights of your story. This will also help you with taking a “less is more” approach and saying a lot more on a limited canvas.

Is the Resume enough?

Not Always. Executive hiring does not necessarily happen through conventional methods, and online application is not only the way executives reach their potential employers. A Cover Letter, even if not requested by the employer, increases your chances of selection as it prompts the recruiter to check your Resume in detail.

Interactive presentation’s like online portfolios are much more effective in creating an impact. A recent futuristic study  shows that 86% of the survey respondents either “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” that they will visit a portfolio when given the option.

With the list above, you must be able to scan your present resume and how you can make it work. If you are still confused, and not able to get that perfect resume, we are here to help.
