You heard the rumours… What happens when you get laid off? Here’s our suggestions on what to do in the meantime: 1. Expect the worst – start sending out your CVs – you have nothing to lose! You might even get a better job by sending those CVs out. 2. Fire your boss before he/she/it fires you! Life’s too short. You deserve to get a better job. Also, job hunting is easier after a resignation than after being laid off. 3. Pretend nothing has happened. You are a good actor. Believe in yourself. All those years in drama club … now it’s show time! 1. Finally! You can stop pleasing people you hate. But kiss your boss’ ass until the last minute! You still need that reference letter for job hunting. 2. Take a vacation! You are finally free and you deserve it!! Use this opportunity to spend more time with your family. 3. That job wasn’t your calling. It’s time to chase your dream – be the rapper you’re destined to be! 4. You worked like a mule every day – it’s time to reinvent your lifestyle – sleep early, exercise and eat healthy. 5. If the company is wind down, it’s not your fault. If you’re one of the many staff that your company has laid off, blame capitalism. If you’re the only one fired, it’s your company’s loss that your value and hard work is not appreciated. 6. Make a list of all the bad things at work – there’s always no soap in the bathroom, the food around the office were bad – there wasn’t even a bubble tea shop for heaven’s sake! 7. Millions of people are going through the same thing as you. Hullet House in 1881 Heritage just announced that it is going to close down ; HSBC laid off 120 of its IT staff in March (SCMP) ; 600 workers at Cathay Pacific are laid off and it was rumored that there will be 200 more jobs cut off. (Reuters) If you are afraid that you are going to lose your job, you are not alone! Sociologist C. Wright Mills called it the sociological imagination. Your personal trouble is a public issue – the economy is going down. Again, blame capitalism. 8. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Whenever you surmount a new obstacle, you grow new muscles. 9. You learn who your real friends are –who disappeared from your life now that you have been fired and who continues to stand by you. 10. You have always hated your job, but you are always too tired to go and get a better job. Now you can focus on job hunting! Submit your resume and find your job here.
