6 months at Better Placed and what a Journey it’s been so far – plenty of highs, a few lows but overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience and a great place to work!
I was apprehensive at first as Recruitment was a completely new career for me, having previously spent 3 years as an elite swimming coach as well as enjoying a brief stint as a trainee accountant. It was actually one of my best mates who suggested recruitment as being the next step in my career and it was hard not to listen to his advice as he’d been really successful for a number of years – bought his first house at 25 and goes on what seems like 4/5 holidays every year.
After being lured in by the lifestyle of recruitment and the whole ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality the next question was where to work? Easy answer, Better Placed! The culture is infectious and it’s hard not to enjoy coming into work. Everyone is supportive and willing you to succeed but also at the same time competitive which creates an atmosphere indicative of success.
The first month was very much a transitioning period where I was learning the ropes and adjusting to a new working environment. It was extremely fast paced and took a little bit of getting used to but with regular support from the rest of the team it wasn’t long before I found my feet. The reality is that recruitment, as with any job, can be tough but if you’re willing to put in the graft and enjoy networking with talented and ambitious people then it can be a great career.
After the first month, I was set and ready to grow my network! Meeting candidates and clients from a variety of sectors helped me pick up the marketing lingo and to begin to understand what makes a great marketing professional. I’ve taken on the Public Sector & NFP desk which has been extremely exciting as it’s like running a business within a business. I’m networking with senior professionals in local government, higher education and not for profit organisations across Yorkshire and the East Midlands and can proudly say that I’ve placed some brilliant candidates in their dream jobs.
It’s been a rollercoaster so far and I can’t wait for it to continue. I look forward to speaking to more candidates and continuing to grow the Better Placed Network!
