The resident board of the Daniel Island Community Fund has awarded the Daniel Island Town Association a $1.5 million grant for improvement projects that will help turn two of the island’s most prominent parks into destinations for entertainment and recreation.
Guggenheim Plaza, located in the heart of downtown Daniel Island between Seven Farms and Island Park drives, will be upgraded to include a large wooden deck on the Island Park Drive side of the Plaza that will serve as an area for events and entertainment. Significant landscape enhancements, new lighting, improvements to the fountains, additional seating and a seasonal shade structure will be included in the renovations. With these changes, Guggenheim Plaza will attract residents, visitors and Daniel Island’s ever-growing workforce for casual use. It will also become a special event space with enough capacity for thousands to enjoy. Check out this conceptual video for a bird’s eye view of what it will look like when complete:
The Community Fund grant will also be used for enhancements along the waterfront trail and dock on the Wando River. Additions to the public dock – including a kayak and SUP launch, additional dock slips for day boating and sailing, and a covered pier head – will allow for increased waterfront access for residents and visitors. The riverfront trail in this location will receive upgraded lighting and seating, and the addition of a new covered pavilion with seating (large enough to serve as a stage for live music) and a hammock garden will provide space for residents and visitors to enjoy the breezes off the Wando or the sounds of live music.
Both projects are currently in the permitting stage, and construction on both is expected to begin as early as this spring.
These new enhancements will be made possible by the largest grant the DICF has awarded since inception 15 years ago. The DICF was established as a means for supporting community enhancement projects and philanthropic initiatives on Daniel Island and in the surrounding Cainhoy peninsula communities. This private 501 (c) 4 organization is financially supported by a Community Enhancement Fee on all resale transactions on the island. The structure of the DICF allows its financial resources to grow as the island grows, creating a legacy for the community for generations to come. Zero funding from Annual Property Owner Assessments goes toward the Community Fund.
