The Origins of the New Patient Course: Part 2


Last week, we began telling the origin story of the New Patient Course. When Measurable Solutions’ Co-Founder and President, Shaun Kirk, split from his private physical therapy practice partner, he lost more than half of his referrals, leaving his business on the brink of destruction. Unsure of what to do, he attended a seminar where a consultant gave him some harsh but helpful advice. She encouraged him to consider his own role in his practice’s prosperity so that he could take charge of his business for the better. This turn of events ultimately led Mr. Kirk to not just regain but grow his practice. In this process, he developed the principles that form the fundamentals of the New Patient Course. New Management and Marketing Methods

That day at the seminar, the consultant asked a second question: “How much management training do you have?” Of course, at this time, Mr. Kirk’s answer was “none.” He knew how to treat patients very well, but he didn’t know how to run a Business. Mr. Kirk went about educating himself on the basics of practice management and marketing. He established succinct, successful principles for running his business and getting referrals. In this time, he increased his practice’s profits by a stunning 900 percent and, to top it all off, recaptured referrals from the orthopedists who had promised never to send their patients. Even more impressively, he did so without ever knocking on another doctor’s door. 

A Touring Training Program 

Mr. Kirk was delighted at his creations: a 2-sentence management “law,” four key “buttons” for marketing, and “The Marketing Pyramid,” an effective advertising system. His approach was so workable that he soon had his new (much more competent) receptionist running his marketing campaign. Once again, his biggest business struggle became hiring enough capable employees to keep up with the patients pouring into the practice. When word spread of his success, other practices soon looked to him for advice, seeking to learn his new methods. Mr. Kirk toured throughout the country, training private practice teams in his techniques over two-day, $10,000 workshops. This was an exciting and enjoyable time in Mr. Kirk’s life, but ultimately unsustainable—the traveling lifestyle was difficult at times, and, more importantly, he wanted to share his newfound knowledge with many more practices. 

The Birth of the New Patient Course

With a bit more refinement, he created and delivered the New Patient Course. This was and continues to be a two-day training program offered at our Clearwater, Florida offices. It’s intended for up-and-coming private practice managers and owners just like Mr. Kirk once was—talented practitioners who simply need to learn the business side of their operations.
