A combination of premium finishes and fantastic quality print has won Mercian Labels another industry award, this time the Digital Label Printer of the year 2015!
The winning label was from a project including 10 different designs over 11,200 labels for Bay View ‘Penlon’ Brewery. The label included in house design uplift of the client’s original concept by transferring to metallic substrate suitable for water immersion, embossing of the key ‘Penlon’ brand, matt lamination and an innovative super high gloss spot flexo varnish.
The entry was printed on our latest machine, the Xeikon CX3 Cheetah installed in February 2015.

We are exceptionally proud of these labels as they bring together the very best of flexo, digital, technical innovation and creative design labelling into a dramatic label with huge shelf appeal, all within the constraints of very small run lengths and of course a budget. These labels exemplify just what can be done using Xeikon digital technology that is not viable conventionally – the flexo plates and screen printing mesh origination costs alone would have exceeded the price of the entire job, which was achieved in a timescale of just days!
The client commented: “We originally chose to move from our current supplier to Mercian Labels for these rebranded labels as they promised that they could deliver us both a proof of the artwork and the final set of labels to a superb quality standard within our deadline of less than a week.
We wanted to change the designs as Penlon Cottage Brewery is in its twelfth year, and it was time for a gentle rebranding across the product range, as we are working in an increasingly competitive market and we need to stand out from the crowd. There are 10 beers in total, each with its own individual illustration and colour coding. It is imperative that the labelling works both on an individual bottle as well as a full set. They are beautiful!
In the end we felt like we were treated like their top priority. Given that we hadn’t worked with them before, they went far beyond our expectations with their extremely high level of customer service. Andy is our contact and he has been wonderful! The quality of the labels is very good indeed, and with a turnaround time of 3-5 days we were so pleased with how we were treated that we decided to stick with them.“
