Outside Ceiling Fans What’s the Difference?

If you have some nice indoor furniture there is no way you are going to pick up and put it outside in the rain or the scorching heat, are you? Outdoor furniture is specially designed to be outside and to handle the elements and the same thing goes for Ceiling Fans. Indoor ceiling fans work well for indoors, but they have different qualities than the outside fans have, and this includes the outside elements. An indoor ceiling is great for indoors, but the blades and the motor are not able to handle the outside weather conditions.

What exactly are outside ceiling fans?

There are two different varieties here one is wet-rated and the damp-rated. You need to know the difference between the both and which ones are suited for your situation.

Damp rated

These fans are great for humidity and spaces that are covered in and protected. However, these fans cannot come in direct contact with the snow or rain.  These are more suited to garages, sheds and enclosed patio areas. The wiring for the fan is protected and has a non-corrosive cover to protect the motor. These fans are quite efficient and work well in very humid areas and are even more suited inside a bathroom rather than a normal inside fan.

Wet rated

These ceiling fans are able to handle rain, wind and all the other harsh outside weather. If the fan is exposed to water or you have an outdoor area with a roof, but no sides water can still get to the fan in high winds so this is a must for this type of situation. The wet rated fans are sealed and are designed not to short even if they are exposed to water. The outside fans are designed with ABS plastic, so they won’t warp during the harsh weather conditions. The wet rated fans may even be hosed down if they are dirty and dusty.

It is important you ensure the fan you buy is for outside use. If an indoor fan is put outside you risk shorting out the power and causing an electrical fire. Your fan will also become damaged from moisture and heat as it isn’t made to withstand harsh elements like the outdoor fans are. The good news is that you can still install an outdoor fan inside your home without any problem.

Are there options available for ceiling fans?

There is a huge variety of ceiling fans out that have a good decorative appeal to them, so they are easy to match with your existing décor or room colour. A popular design is the tropical ceiling fan that has blades designed to look like palm leaves. Now you can enjoy the tropics in your own backyard. Most outdoor ceiling fans come with a light, so it is a two for one deal all in one package. Entertain friends and family in the comfort of a cool breeze on these warm, humid nights.

If you are not sure which fan suits where, talk to the staff who can assist in getting you the right fan for the right job.
