Arik Air To Pay Affected Passengers $150 Dollars Each For Delayed Luggage

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, yesterday sanctioned Arik Air for its inability to ferry passengers Luggage over 48 hours after arrival at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos from London. Arik is to pay each Passenger whose luggage was left behind in London $150 and the airline has been given 24 hours to ferry all the luggage to Lagos.

These sanctions were announced yesterday by the Director, Consumer Protection Directorate, NCAA, Mr Abdullahi Adamu, while speaking with newsmen at the International wing of the Muritala Muhammed Airport , Ikeja shortly after addressing the stranded irate Arik passengers.

Adamu said the airline has violated the Montreal convention of 1999 and under normal circumstances, the passengers ought to have arrived with their luggage. But he expressed regrets that two days after arrival, their luggage were yet to arrive.

He said NCAA has imposed a fine of $150 dollars per passenger on Arik in accordance with the Montreal convention.

According to him, “The compensation for delayed luggage according to Montreal Convention of 1999 is S150 dollars. Arik has failed in its duty because that compensation should have come the moment the passenger lands without his bag. They have not done that and they are arguing with the passengers who agreed to waived part of their right to collect S50 dollars as against to S150 dollars.

“We have also directed Arik to bring in the balance of luggage for all passengers in the next 24 hours. We have written Arik in that direction and they are complying but that does not stop sanction because violation has taken place.”

Abdullahi who described the action of the airline as a national embarrassment , however appealed to passengers to show understanding with NCAA adding, that if the full sanction was applied, it will bring down the airlines but assured that the airline will definitely pay for the consequences of their action.

He further warned all airlines, both domestic and foreign that sanction will be meted out to them in the case of luggage default. He also ordered that arrangement be made to get launch and accommodation for the stranded passengers. Vanguard
