Wike To Empower 22,430 Repentant Cultists, Disband Vigilante Groups

Governor Nyesom Wike has called on 22,430 cultists who embraced the state government’s Amnesty programme to remain law abiding, assuring that the government would unfold a comprehensive empowerment programme for them.

The governor who spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, after he received a report of the Amnesty Committee, also disbanded vigilante groups in all communities in the state, saying most of them had been linked with cult groups by the amnesty committee.

He said: “I hereby disband all vigilante committees in various communities. They should be profiled by security to be sure of what they are into.

“Those of you who have denounced crime and don’t go back, the state will support you. Don’t go back to crime because if you are caught the law will deal with you.”

The governor said cultists who refused to key into the Amnesty Programme were enemies of the state, adding that the government would take the battle against cultism and related crimes to their doorsteps.

“Those who refused to surrender are now enemies of the state and the state will take the battle to them,” he said.

Wike also appealed to politicians in the state not to politicize crime, stressing that there should be collective effort to rid the state of criminals.

He lauded the amnesty committee for discharging its duties effectively, noting that the amnesty had reduced crime and kidnapping in the state. Vanguard
